I have bought heaps of Start 10's for others, I've never had any expire, I first bought my Start 10 licence when 10 came out, before that I used the Windows 8 version, I built a new PC back in last May & was able to transfer it - There are other programs that do the same job including a free one 'open shell' but prefer Stardock.

Windows 10's UI team should have a video conference with Apple's UI team and ask for tips. I don't own an Apple device, but from what I see here and there, their design language is uniform and consistent across all of their platforms. While Microsoft is kind of all over the place.

News and Interests

Microsoft is working on a Google Discover-like newsfeed for the taskbar. This feature is called "News and Interests" and it will show news stories, sports scores, and other information based on your interests and location.

Hide stories

Microsoft will pin the newsfeed to the taskbar and users can hover on the weather icon to access it. You can customize the feed by clicking on the “Manage interests” button, which will launch the MSN customization page in Chromium-based Microsoft Edge.

Display Settings

Microsoft is adding a new option to the Settings app that will allow you to turn off the content adaptive brightness control (CABC) feature. For those unaware, the CABC feature is used by OEMs like Dell and Lenovo to improve battery performance on PCs, but it comes at the cost of image quality.

In some configurations, it can result in distracting brightness changes.

Display Settings

Starting with the Sun Valley update, you can turn off the feature by navigating to the Display Settings page.

File Explorer

Microsoft is working on a new touch-friendly interface for File Explorer. In preview builds, Microsoft is spacing out the items, columns, and rows in File Explorer and adding a little more room for other areas to help you easily interact with your files with the touchscreen.

Explorer

Microsoft claims that these changes will offer better consistency with modern (XAML) code, which is used in UWP (Universal Windows Platform) apps. New touch UI won't be exclusive to tablet mode, which means you can try out the changes when you're using the desktop mode (normal experience).

Camera Settings

Microsoft is also introducing a new Camera Settings page that will give users the ability to add/remove cameras and configure the default image settings of each one.

Camera

This new Settings page can be found at Settings > Devices > Camera and users can use it to configure the default image settings, such as brightness and contrast.

Animations

Sun Valley update will also introduce new animations when opening and minimizing windows.

Animation

Currently, the new animation is enabled for almost all windows transitions, including Command Prompt, PowerShell, modern and legacy apps, and more.

Windows 10 is gaining these nifty enhancements in the next update

The next version of Windows is called the May 2021 Update and it's going to be a minor service pack style-like with a strong focus on quality improvements for enterprise customers.

Later this year, Microsoft will release the first big update of the year codenamed "Windows 10 version 21H2". In addition to a new Start Menu, we're also expecting a number of improvements for existing features, such as the Windows Settings app.

Below we have outlined the new nifty changes expected to launch this year.

HDR support for colour managed apps

In the Sun Valley update, Microsoft will enable support for HDR mode in apps creative and artistic apps that use International Color Consortium (ICC) display color profiles. This includes Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom Classic, and CorelDraw.

This feature will allow your favourite apps to get accurate colour and access the full gamut of your HDR display.

New system font

Microsoft is introducing Segoe UI Variable to include an optical axis so that font outlines can scale seamlessly from small to larger display sizes. The feature is called "Segoe UI Variable" and Microsoft says that it is a refreshed take on the classic Segoe.

It offers improved legibility at small sizes and much improved outlines at display sizes. Segoe UI Variable solves legibility issues on different form factors and resolutions by enabling support for a new feature that dynamically offer great legibility at very small sizes, and style at large sizes.

A new option under the Power menu on the Start menu

Microsoft has added a new option to the Power menu on the Start menu to restart apps after signing in when you reboot your device.

This setting is based on the existing "Restart apps" feature, which is currently available under Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Restart apps in Windows 10 May 2020 Update (20H1) or newer.

Windows 10 successor will ship with massive scheduling updates:
Windows comes with a system scheduler that controls multitasking and improves the overall performance of the platform by determining the threads that should receive the next processor time slice. The scheduler has been designed to determine the thread that should run next using scheduling priorities, but it’s currently not properly optimized for hybrid CPUs.

The upcoming version of Windows will reportedly feature “massive scheduling updates” to support Intel’s upcoming CPUs.

This is according to leaker and YouTuber Moore’s Law is Dead, who also claimed that Intel’s long-awaited 12th generation lineup “Alder Lake chips” will be launching alongside Microsoft’s next generation of Windows in October.

Intel’s Alder Lake chips will reportedly introduce a whole new socket and it’ll be using both normal CPU cores and highly efficient/low power ones to offer better performance and long battery life on laptops. Some reports have suggested that Alder Lake CPUs will offer a major performance upgrade over Rocket Lake.

Microsoft is apparently working with Intel on performance optimization for “Alder Lake-S” desktop processors. According to reports, Windows will be getting a new and improved scheduler with support for hybrid processors (CPU cores designed for different tasks).

Microsoft pauses preview builds to keep Windows 10 redesign a secret:
Microsoft’s decision to pause the release of preview builds suggests that the company is busy moving codes internally and merging the Sun Valley features, which were stripped out of the preview builds, back into the Dev Channel.

There won’t be any new builds until June 24 and it absolutely makes sense to pause the rollout of preview builds. That’s because Microsoft is holding back the “Sun Valley” design so it can surprise consumers with a complete makeover of Windows at the event.

Unlike the previous Windows releases, Windows Sun Valley (Windows 11?) UI overhaul will be felt across the entire desktop experience, from the Windows Settings through to the Start menu, and pretty much every popular component in-between.

We have already confirmed that Microsoft has been testing elements of Windows 10X for Windows 11 / Sun Valley features, such as the Action Center and Start Menu.
