Hot Take Microsoft Gave FBI Keys To Unlock Encrypted Data

So, don't store the key in the account. One problem seemingly solved.
With Microsoft forcing the use Microsoft account on Windows 11 more aggressively, that soon might not be an option anymore.
That's why Data Storage/Location is important. We think those are digital but when Court Order comes knocking on the door, jurisdiction still applies and at the end might need to surrender needed data for further investigations.
Some people think that you should use services from "enemy" countries to be protected, but this isn't really the case. Governments, no matter how much they hate each other, they are still sharing data when crime is in question.
John McAfee in 2019: "If you think you have any privacy whatsoever with an encrypted system, whether it's an email system like ProtonMail... you have no f*cking privacy."

That's the truth. Proton presents themselves as private alternative. Yet, they helped and revealed user data to authorities on multiple occasions. Obviously, they have to comply with government requests but don't advertise yourself as true privacy alternative when you do in fact keep data and are willing to cooperate with authorities.

People use Proton Mail because it's encrypted. It isn't. The encryption they claim only works when you're e-mailing another Proton Mail user. Encryption doesn't work when you're e-mailing any other e-mail service. And the chances that someone from your friend or family circle uses Proton Mail are almost 0. There is a feature which encrypts mail and sends user of another e-mail service a link that opens the message, but let's be real, no one will open a message in another window.

I think people also use Proton because your stored emails are encrypted. The government may be able to access your metadata and account information, but it can't access the stored encrypted emails. Although Proton would necessarily receive plaintext emails from other providers before storing them encrypted in your account, it doesn't seem to get ordered by governments to forward these still unencrypted emails either. 🤷‍♂️

If government can't get mails from Proton, they will go to another service and get the entire conversation from them. Proton keeps account info and metadata so they will still give authorities to whom did the Proton user talk to.

No one should be surprised. After all, it's Microsoft we're talking about.
MS will be dead by 2030, it is literally digging it's own grave. Many companies in Europe, Asia and Australia have set dates to switch to linux, because of legal liabilities.

I agree. And Windows is on its downfall. With more and more bugs present people are slowly but steadily moving onto the Linux. Next time I'll have to reinstall Windows, I'll go and install ZorinOS.

Although that is technically possible, AFAIK, it has never happened in more restricted jurisdictions. Services are typically not forced to hand over conversations stored in one party's account due to the government's interest in the second party. When A is talking to B, if the government is interested in A, they usually don't search B's account without a different judicial demand.

He's not paranoid or delusional at all as to what the govt portrays before his death.
I think if you want to evade governments (now or in the future), it’s good to have a healthy bit of paranoia. I don’t understand the negativity towards Proton (or encrypted email storage in general), though; it’s already a step up from Google and Outlook. Companies that don’t follow the laws usually don’t stay in business.
