Microsoft stopped supporting Windows XP back into 2014, but took the 'highly unusual' step of releasing a patch for the ancient OS two years ago in a bid to fightback against the WannaCry ransomware, and then included XP in that June’s Patch Tuesday updates.


You’d be forgiven for thinking that that would be the very last time Microsoft patched XP, but no. The software giant has included Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 (also no longer supported) in today’s Patch Tuesday fixes.

Microsoft published the patch for the old OS's because, sadly, many companies have still XP or Server 2003. There is still a lot of legacy software or hardware (such as labo analytic machines) that uses the old OS's.

It is normal to update there are still banks that use XP ATMs.

Interesting.. There are all sorts of entities and equities that still use XP, but that is against the Microsoft business model to release patches.... even though --- although not widely known --- Microsoft has been producing XP updates all along for a few select paying customers.
