Real-time Microsoft protection for Chrome users

While Microsoft is pushing hard for users to stick with Microsoft Edge as the default browser in Windows 10, it’s no secret that most people switch to Google Chrome.
Market share stats are the living confirmation in this regard, as Chrome is said to be running on more than 60 percent of PCs across the world, while Edge is far behind with approximately 5 percent.
Microsoft is well aware of this, it seems, so the company is trying to go after Chrome users with a new extension that’s supposed to make browsing more secure using the power of its own Windows Defender antivirus.

The company has launched a new Google Chrome extension called Windows Defender Browser Protection, whose purpose is to analyze the links that you open and protect you against malware and malicious websites.

Continuously updated link list

With real-time protection available right in Google Chrome, Microsoft says the chances of a cybercriminal to compromise your system with online threats like phishing emails and websites designed to trick you into downloading malicious files.

“If you click a malicious link in an email or navigate to a site designed to trick you into disclosing financial, personal or other sensitive information, or a website that hosts malware, Windows Defender Browser Protection will check it against a constantly updated list of malicious URLs known to Microsoft,” the software giant explains.

If the verified link is flagged as dangerous in Microsoft’s database, the extension shows a red warning screen to make you aware of the risks you’re exposing to when loading the website.
Microsoft promises the list of harmful sites will be continuously updated to protect users against the most recent malware and phishing websites.

You can download the Windows Defender Browser Protection extension for Google Chrome using this link or you can switch to Microsoft Edge if you think the default browser has the feature arsenal that fits your needs.

Microsoft Beefs Up Chrome's Security With Windows Defender Extension - offered by Windows Defender
fossbytes.com: Microsoft Beefs Up Chrome’s Security With Windows Defender Extension

April 18, 2018

When it comes to security, Microsoft appears to be betting a lot on Windows Defender technologies that find a home in Windows 10, Edge browser, and other Microsoft products.
The company has taken another step and brought Edge’s security features to Google Chrome in the form of an extension called Windows Defender Browser Protection.

Microsoft says that the extension constantly looks for malicious links as you browse the web and alerts when it something matched with its database. For instance, the links in phishing emails and sites that trick users into installing malware on their computer to seal personal information and financial details.
Google Chrome also has built-in security measures to safeguard users against unsafe sites and other malicious actors. But Microsoft, citing 2017 test results from NSS Labs, claims that Edge offers far better protection than Chrome and Firefox.
In comparison to Edge (99%), Chrome offers 87% protection against phishing attacks and Firefox is at 70%.
You can download Windows Defender Browser Protection using this link.
In case, the extension is preventing you from visiting a site that’s fine; you can turn off the toggle button that says “Safeguard against suspicious and malicious sites.” It also includes a link to Microsoft privacy statement because it goes without saying that an extension of such nature has to monitor people’s browsing activities.

Protect yourself against online threats, like phishing and malicious websites, with real-time protection from Microsoft.
The Windows Defender Browser Protection extension helps protect you against online threats, such as links in phishing emails and websites designed to trick you into downloading and installing malicious software that can harm your computer.

If you click a malicious link in an email or navigate to a site designed to trick you into disclosing financial, personal or other sensitive information, or a website that hosts malware, Windows Defender Browser Protection will check it against a constantly updated list of malicious URLs known to Microsoft.

If the malicious link matches one on the list, Windows Defender Browser Protection will show a red warning screen letting you know that the web page you are about to visit is known to be harmful, giving you a clear path back to safety with one click.

I think this is a kind of telemetry for their MS products because chrome is the most popular browser
therefore, Edge's detection rate will be better and windows defender and windows smartscreen will also be better
the more data they collect, the better the detection rate

I have Google Safe Browsing turned off and similar for FF Safe Browsing which, sometimes, also uses Google Safe Browsing.

Won't be installing this Windows Defender Extension since have Nano AdBlocker/Nano Defender, AdGuard and other filters

Google/Mozilla/MS are just collecting more of your privacy data the more you use their services

This Microsoft extension could be effective in real life:
SECURE: COMPLETE - Gandalf_The_Grey's Security Configuration for 2018
I think it's about luck when the best extension can block 9/10 and the other can block 5/10 but it blocks the page the user opens while the best extension misses
it's better to have both :)
smartscreen is really really strong. Smartscreen + google SB = perfect combo (+norton safe web = (y):X3:)
I'm using those 3 and feel very safe

I think netcraft is the best free extension against phishing. No one can beat it. Unfortunately, it missed the link he got
