Weird. It didnt react at all at this test page
Windows Defender SmartScreen Demo

However Edge worked completely fine.
it blocked for me
the 2nd, 3rd and 4th links

Untitled.png

but it failed in other links

Windows Defender extension doesn't block these links from Microsoft test page by Azure Phoenix post: Windows Defender SmartScreen Demo :

* first link: Is This Phishing?
* Exploit Page
* Malvertising
- so block only these two on Iron (Chrome fork): Malware Page, Blocked Download

Then under App Rep Demos, doesn't block:
* Unknown Program (freevideo.exe) - no reaction
* Known Malware (but I don't have .NET Framework 4.0 hopefully to me) - I see cmd window...

I'm disappointed...on Firefox (and Nightly) nothing blocked by Norton Safe Web...

EDIT:
I'm sorry for my fault (already rectified above): on Iron tested Windows Defender yes, but on Firefox an Nightly I've tested Norton Safe Web add-on!
Indeed, On Chrome Web Store we have Windows Defender (no more Norton Safe Web conveniently), on Firefox we have Norton Safe Web add-on (no Windows Defender...).
So they split the cake between them.

Windows Defender seems to me more efficient than Norton Safe Web, taking into consideration the results of the same SmartScreen Demo test.

But best test are made by Evjl's Rain - results in post #21, have confidence, thank you!

I'm disappointed...on Firefox nothing blocked...
don't worry, these files are completely empty and don't have any malicious activity
they are designed to test smartscreen and edge, not for other purposes so no surprise when both chrome and firefox failed to block them. In fact, firefox and chrome SHOULD NOT block them because they are not dangerous

I think this is a kind of telemetry for their MS products because chrome is the most popular browser
therefore, Edge's detection rate will be better and windows defender and windows smartscreen will also be better
the more data they collect, the better the detection rate

I can't find anything specific about the privacy in regards to this extensions, so that is an interesting thought: use it as an extra url crawler build for Chrome users. (y)

Norton Safe Web
it's still there, you just can't search for it
also you can't expect one extension to block everything, hence i'm using multiple ones.
it's like expecting one AV to have signatures for everything.

Reversely one could install Adguard on Edge and enable Adguard's malware/phising protection with Yandex/Google safe browsing. :LOL: just to balance the score

How malware protection works | Adguard Knowledgebase
according to this article, if I'm not mistaken, only Adguard for windows support google safe browsing API while the extension doesn't support it
they use Lookup API instead
:unsure:

I couldn't find yandex engine anywhere

On my Asus Transformer I have Norton enabled as DNS in my Wireless Adaptor, in Edge (hardened by Windows Defender exploit protection) with Adguard (so Google safe browsing + Smart Screen) and run Chrome with Windows Defender (so also Google Safe Browsing plus Smartscreen) as secundary browser, thanks to this forum (y)
