Earlier this month, Microsoft released a number of security patches for its software products as part of its monthly "Patch Tuesday". However, a problem with one of those updates has resulted in Microsoft re-releasing the patch to fix a problem that crept up afterwards.

Infoworld.com reports that the patch in question had the official name MS12-078/KB 2753842 and it was supposed to fix a security problem with Microsoft's OpenType Compact Font Format drive. However, after the patch was released this month, reports began to show up that certain OpenType fonts had disappeared in various programs, including PowerPoint, Excel, and others.

Now I know why a few days ago when I checked WU in my XP, it showed a few updates that needed to be done. I had done my updates manually, as I always do, on the 14th but checked WU again just for doing it and found the new updates being available. I did not look at them closely but they all were Office related. Tonight when I get home I will check them out. Probably one or more of those updates is the new KB2753842.

Right now, I am on my W7. In W7 I don't have Office and KB2753842 doesn't show as being installed but it is showing up as being available. For me, according to this link it replaces KB2779030
