Microsoft Teams gets new education features as new school year approaches

Microsoft has announced several new improvements to Microsoft Teams that will better the experience for students and educators. In the latest update, Microsoft has added a new feature called Reflect to build students’ emotional skills and has redesigned the home page based on feedback. Educators can also create and review Reading Progress assignments on iPad and Android tablets.

With Reflect, Microsoft gives students a way to share their feelings about assignments they receive. They will be able to do check-ins by using emoji or characters (called Feelings Monsters) that represent how they feel. Some example responses include Excited, Bored, Confused, and Optimistic. The responses can only be viewed by their teacher and therefore students do not have to worry about their peers’ responses. If students want to, there is an option to share the Feelings Monsters they choose with classmates.

Microsoft builds proof-of-concept to enable e-signatures during Teams meetings

Microsoft has announced that it has developed a proof-of-concept solution that allows digital signatures to be made during Teams meetings. The company said that e-signature providers will be able to implement the solution.

With a few clicks, a Teams participant will be able to share a document that needs signing with the rest of the group. Participants can tap on the field that they need to sign, and Teams SSO will enable seamless signing of the document. Microsoft said that some common documents in meetings that need to be signed include purchase agreements, incoming invoices, and NDAs.

Language Interpretation is now generally available for Microsoft Teams Meetings

Microsoft has announced the general availability of Language Interpretation in Microsoft Teams Meetings, in an attempt to cater to the demands of multinational and multilingual corporations, and businesses working across the globe and to make communicating in the virtual world across languages easier.

With the latest language interpretation feature, professional interpreters will be able to convert the speaker's message into another language without disrupting them. As this feature offers simultaneous interpretation, participants whose medium of communication is not the same language can also collaborate with each other efficiently.

Furthermore, to ensure inclusivity, language interpretation will enable users to listen to a meeting in the language they prefer, collaborate in multilingual meetings, and make spoken content accessible to all participants. Using this feature, organizers will be able to invite interpreters to a meeting from Meeting options, and interpreters will be able to start interpreting immediately after joining the meeting.

Microsoft Teams language interpretation option

If language interpretation is enabled for a meeting, participants joining it will have the option to select a language channel to listen to during the meeting. This will allow them to hear the interpreter's translation louder than the speaker. To learn more about this feature, head over to the dedicated webpage here.

Microsoft Teams will soon introduce a new payments feature

Although the plan is still in the nascent stages of development, Microsoft believes it will be more useful for businesses that wanted to have an inbuilt option to request payment during a Teams meeting.

A new note on the Microsoft 365 roadmap read:
Grow your business by getting paid for appointments, classes, or events you host on Teams. Once you connect a third-party service to receive payments, you’ll be able to request payment right during a Teams meeting—and have customers pay you in just a few clicks. This feature is supported for businesses registered in the United States and Canada at this time.

Microsoft gives a "sneak peek" of new Teams Chat on Windows 11

Microsoft calls it the sneak peek since this only rolling out to some users at the moment, with wider availability planned for later in the coming months.

The company explains how the new features in Teams Chat works:
When you open Chat from the taskbar, the focus will be on you with a preview of your own video, and the various ways you can connect with your people. It is now easier than ever to immediately start a video call with those who are using Microsoft Teams for personal use. For those who are not on Teams, not a problem- you can easily share a call link with anyone via SMS or email and get the conversation going directly within Chat.

Microsoft is working on AI-based file suggestions in chat for Teams users. The company aims to make it easier for users to attach and send files, thus saving valuable time. The way it works is fairly simple and exactly the same as how suggested replies work in Teams chats.

Thanks to the implementation of AI, Teams will be able to detect when your conversations indicate sharing files and will surface them accordingly. Among the files shown to you, you will be able to choose the right one and send it with just one click. Although not confirmed, you should also have the option to ignore the suggestions if you think they are not helpful, exactly like how you can ignore suggested replies and type everything you want to say instead.

One of the upcoming Teams features is "enhanced flyout design." With the new flyout design, Microsoft is aiming to achieve better app engagement and discovery. Microsoft says it will help you "quickly launch apps that you have as well as discover new ones to help you complete your day-to-day tasks in Teams." The software giant, however, has not shared how exactly a new flyout design will help users achieve all this.

The "enhanced flyout design" in Teams will arrive in February next year for desktop users. That is what Microsoft is saying on its Roadmap page, but given its track record, you should not keep your hopes high. Remember how dark mode for Word for the web got delayed? The new flyout design in Teams may also meet the same fate.

Microsoft revamps Teams meeting toolbar to make navigation easier

The purpose of this revamped meeting toolbar is to make navigation easier than ever in Teams. Microsoft says, "The updated Meeting toolbar in Microsoft Teams makes navigating meetings, and discovering new features and capabilities easier than ever."

The meeting toolbar usability improvements include a dedicated raise hand button, which means you can now raise your hands directly from the toolbar. You can also seamlessly switch between different view options from the new View button in the toolbar. Also, you can navigate the More menu easier from sub-menu groupings. Lastly, the improved toolbar now features a new react button.

However, not every Teams user is eligible to experience the new toolbar. For now, the toolbar usability improvements are available to everyone in the Teams Public Preview channel running Windows or macOS. Microsoft will bring the changes to the general public when they are ready.

Microsoft is preparing to launch a new version of Microsoft Teams next month that has been rebuilt from the ground up to significantly improve its system resource usage on PCs and laptops. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that the software giant has recently started testing this new Teams client broadly inside Microsoft, with plans to roll out a preview to Microsoft Teams users in March.

Known as Microsoft Teams 2.0 or 2.1 internally, Microsoft has been working on this new Teams client for years. The app should use 50 percent less memory, tax the CPU less, and result in better battery life on laptops.

Microsoft announced that is rolling out video filters for Teams, and they go a step up beyond just adding a nice background of a tropical beach.

Here's how Microsoft describes the new feature: "The filters enable participants in Teams Meetings to augment their video stream with visual effects ranging from animated frames to styles changing the video’s hue. You can apply these filters even before you join a meeting from the lobby."

Microsoft is working on a new feature for Teams users on Windows and Mac to enable them to create offline meetings from within the app. You will be able to set up calendar events for things like personal appointments, lunch break slots, and more.

Microsoft has not explained in great detail how the feature will function, but it could be very similar to how you set up offline calendar events in Outlook. As things stand right now, you can not create offline meetings directly from the Teams calendar. Whenever you create a meeting in Teams, it generates a meeting link with it. You will be able to change this behavior in the next couple of months.

As described by Microsoft, Teams users will have to turn off the "online toggle" when creating an offline meeting from within the app. And when you do, Teams will not automatically generate an online meeting link. These offline Teams meetings will not have chat threads or other Teams online meeting artifacts.
