We are removing support for OpenVPN, it will be completely removed on 15th January 2026.

The process of removing OpenVPN from our app starts today and may be completed much earlier.

Why
We want to focus entirely on the WireGuard protocol, as we explained in detail back in 2017.

By moving to a single protocol, we will be able to focus our resources where they can make a difference.

How does this affect you?
If you make use of our Mullvad VPN app on any platform, it will not impact you at all. Note that OpenVPN support will be removed from both client- and server-side, meaning that even if you have an old app with OpenVPN support, it will not work after 15th January 2026.

If you are using a router or a third-party app that uses OpenVPN, we strongly advise you to start migrating to WireGuard. You have roughly one year to complete your migration. We have guides on how to use WireGuard in the help section of our website.

The future
WireGuard is the Future

For the universal right to privacy.

Interesting, bye bye OpenVPN.

WireGuard is better anyway (y)(y)(y)

The original developer Jason A Donenfeld has abandoned or left the project. Now the project is at the mercy of maintainers of which there is only one. That means Wireguard is vulnerable to the "one-person shop" problem.

OpenVPN has a large community and is very actively supported and developed.

Wireguard for Windows hasn't been updated in years. It's abandonware. Last time I submitted a bug report it was fixed though but that was years ago. Linux seems OK with newish releases.

It wouldn't surprise me if the original Wireguard developer got a tap on the shoulder by higher ups/LEA and was told to stop developing it for at least Windows if not all versions.

To be honest I'm not sure about this move, as bazang said OpenVpn is well maintained and has a very active community. This is putting all your eggs in one basket as they say.
