The N.S.A. calls its efforts more an act of “active defense” against foreign cyberattacks than a tool to go on the offensive. But when Chinese attackers place similar software on the computer systems of American companies or government agencies, American officials have protested, often at the presidential level.
The hypocrisy there is enough to choke on. Do as I say, not as I do. The long term ramification(s) of these acts will be the crippling of American tech companies, and their respective products which rest of world are now beginning to distrust. They're already seeing the fallout from this with the loss of major contracts, and as other nations balk at using components developed with American technology.
