This is my config, I'm a IT student, so I think I got enough (maybe not) knowledge to avoiding the virus and malware.

On demand: add ZAM
Chrome: HTTPS Eveywhere
AVG pc tuneup: approved

Good advice about UAC/SS (SmartScreen).
Please use caution with driver updater tools, at least check the correctness of the found driver.
In my opinion it is better to update drivers only when it is necessary because of documented problems, and preferably from the official manufacturer site.

Enable UAC as well as Smartscreen.
Consider adding an additional on demand scanner(s).
