NortonDNS is now improved. To take advantage of the improvements you need to register a free account on their site.

  • Content Filtering (currently in Beta) allows you to block various categories of sites with unwanted content like drugs, pornography, scam sites, etc.
  • You now also have the option to Always Allow (whitelist) or Always Block (blacklist) certain sites. Very useful if you were previously bothered by some false-positives.
  • In addition you can also disable the error page that NortonDNS displays when a Web site cannot be found.
Settings on your online NortonDNS account:

This brings NortonDNS closer to OpenDNS in functionality. During personal tests I found that NortonDNS blocks by far more malicious sites than OpenDNS free.

To set up NortonDNS on your computer you can follow the guide How to change your DNS Server in Win7 and use 198.153.192.1 and 198.153.194.1 as your DNS servers. (see screenshot bellow) Or you can use the tool (for Windows) provided on their site. If you have a dynamic external IP you'll have to use the tool if you want to use the new features. The tool allows NortonDNS to link your PC to the settings you configure on your online account.
