Internet Explorer 9 offers the best protection against socially engineered malware according to the latest tests performed by NSS Labs focused on European users.

The results of NSS Labs’s “Web Browser Group Test Socially-Engineered Malware - Europe Q2 2011” report are conclusive with previous findings of the testing outfit, which consistently highlight IE as offering the best protection against socially engineered malware, even though Microsoft rivals contest the conclusions.

RE: IE9 vs. Chrome 10 vs. Firefox 4 vs. Opera 11 vs. Safari 5 vs. IE8 vs. Socially Engine

Windows Internet Explorer 9 - The SmartScreen Filter protection offered by Windows Internet Explorer 9 has two components: URL
Reputation, which is included in IE8 and Application Reputation, which is new to IE9. IE9 caught an
exceptional 92% of the live threats with SmartScreen URL reputation, and an additional 8% with
Application Reputation. IE9 with SmartScreen offers the best protection of any browser against
socially engineered malware. Protection against malware targeting European users matched our
broader findings from the Q3 2010 global test.

Windows Internet Explorer 8 caught 90% of the live threats, an exceptional score that also
matched our broader findings from the Q3 2010 global test.

Apple Safari 5 caught 13% of the live threats. Protection offered was near identical to that of
Chrome and Firefox.

Mozilla Firefox 4 caught 13% of the live threats, far fewer than Internet Explorer 8 or Internet
Explorer 9. Results were 6% less than the 19% protection rate observed in our Q3 2010 global test,
indicating either an overall drop in protection for Firefox or regional weakness in Europe.

Google Chrome 10 caught 13% of the live threats, considerably more than the 3% observed during
the Q3 2010 global test and a welcome improvement.

Opera 11 caught 5% of the live threats, providing a measurable amount protection against sociallyengineered malware for the first time.

Crushing results,IE killed all the competition on this test. The IE Team had a great idea when they've decided to integrate into their browser a Reputation System...Definitely something that other companies should integrate into their browsers.
While I can appreciate the capabilites of IE's SmartScreen Filter , I would appreciate more if this browser would be updated and maintained constantly.Due to the poor mantainace IE is always behind in the security or technology field when compared with Chrome or Firefox.Different vulnerabilities or the inability to fully support HTML5 and CSS are IE's main problems.
Firefox has recently announced that they have start a rapid release program in order to keep up with the latest events around the web , I do think that the IE team should also start a similar program because at this moment you can count with one hand all the updates that IE received this year.

Well no surprise for IE since they focused on the viruses through smartscreen filter feature which is very effective.
