Hey Guys,

What is the official source of 7-zip?

I am just finishing a clean install of Windows 7 Pro SP1 that ended up taking 48 hours b/c Windows Update kept hanging on "Checking for Updates".

I remember there was a scandal about Sourceforge a few years ago, and I was told not to download from there anymore. Is it 7-zip.org?

The file name is 7z920 -x64.msi. I ran it through VirusTotal and it came up as 0/56, but had bad ratings. One AV flagged the url (1/56) but it was a random less heard of AV company.

Also see here: (PUPs and botnet bundled with 7-zip, according to Invincea | Wilders Security Forums)

Please let me know. I have RollbackRx Professional, but I prefer not to risk it.

Much appreciation for any advice!
Thanks!

I never had any trouble with 7-Zip.
CCleaner updates & downloads from FileHippo are now coming with Goobzo, a PUA browser extension.

One also has to consider the date in which the file is added. Some antivirus developers might take more times than other in adding a signature. If something is 1 year-old and has a 0 in detection then it's highly likely that it's safe. However if something is only a few days old and has 0-3 detection, it's possible it might take some antivirus developers time to analyze and deem it either safe or malicious.

But sometimes it could be false positive. For instance, Roguekiller and AdwCleaner usually get a lot of flag by antivirus on Virustotal.com for specific reason in the past, but when i try it out on my friend infected laptop it did do its job for free with no ads. Also recommended by virus removal experts as well.

Sourceforge and few well known others sometimes may provide mistakes however issues were fix immediately.

7-zip.org never provide malicious content and 1/50 + from Virustotal does not signified to be malicious.

But hey, Virustotal provide FP detector mechanism to be easily notify the possible erroneous detection.

I you download it from the orignal site, there should be no problem at all. On more ad-supported sites such as Cnet, you can end up with an adware installer or you could click a download button that is an ad, so avoid using those sites. In this case it should be a FP like others already said.

What is the official source of 7-zip?

SourceForge provides a link to the developers' website, so yes 7-zip.org is the correct site.

7-zip is completely safe.

The article that was posted is misleading, but be aware some download mirror sites do bundle adware with their own web installers.

Is Sourceforge considered safe to download in general now? My understanding was to stay away possibly permanently (again this was something from 1-3 years ago).

Thanks for answering Huracan. I appreciate your time.
