Omegle, a popular online chat service that allowed individuals to connect and talk with strangers, has shut down after more than 14 years citing growing misuse of the platform, including in committing “unspeakably heinous crimes.”

The site, founded in 2009 by a then 18-year-old programmer and high school student Leif K-Brooks, was bootstrapped throughout its existence. Though it waned in popularity over the years, it still pulled about 50 million visitors last month, according to analytics firm SimilarWeb.

Controversies

  • Omegle was subject to a variety of controversies, generally surrounding illegal content, discrimination, pornography and use of the site by minors.
  • Omegle was subject to controversy surrounding allegations of discrimination and alt-right content.
  • Omegle was subject to numerous controversies over child pornography.
According to Brooks, he shut the website down stating constant events of rape and pornography associated with Omegle throughout its history.

On the website, Brooks stated "Omegle is the direct target of these attacks, but their ultimate victim is you: all of you out there who have used, or would have used, Omegle to improve your lives, and the lives of others. When they say Omegle shouldn’t exist, they are really saying that you shouldn’t be allowed to use it; that you shouldn’t be allowed to meet random new people online. That idea is anathema to the ideals I cherish – specifically, to the bedrock principle of a free society that, when restrictions are imposed to prevent crime, the burden of those restrictions must not be targeted at innocent victims or potential victims of crime."

Nevertheless, he later stated, "...However, fear can also be a mental cage that keeps us from all of the things that make life worth living.", claiming that felt he needed to say so in concordance to the pattern of rape on and outside of Omegle.
