I'm planning on getting a new decent multi-purpose laptop (multimedia and gaming) this coming month and I'm sort of in a budget. This is the best laptop that suits my needs and budget ATM. What do you guys think of it? Both the CPU and GPU might be a bottleneck in game performance considering the low clock speeds. Will it be enough to game in 1366 X 768 with High, Ultra or Medium settings? An FPS of 30 and above would be ideal.

Lenovo Z510
Processor: Intel Core i7-4702MQ Processor (2.2-3.2 Ghz, 6 MB Cache)
Operating System: Windows 8.1 (Downgrading to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit due to older games having compatibility issues with Windows 8.1)
Display: 15.6-inch HD display (1366 x 768)
Graphics: 2GB DDR3 Nvidia GeForce GT740M
Memory: 4GB Dual Channel DDR3L 1600 MHz (Upgrading to Corsair Vengeance 8 GB 1600 MHz Kit)
Hard Disk Drive: 1TB HDD 5400 RPM
Weight (Net): 4.85 lbs
Sound: Stereo speakers with Dolby®
Home Theater® certification
Optical Drive: Blu-Ray Disc Drive
Connectors: 2x USB 3.0
1x USB 2.0

2-in-1 card reader (SD/MMC)
RJ45
Combo Mic-In and headphone (stereo)

Intel Centrino Wireless N-2230

which brand? (very important), for games , it depend the game:

counter-strike style (or very active games): minimum settings for max FPS
others: depend your needs in it.

It's a Lenovo Z510. Maximum FPS would be good but I do want a little bit of detail into the game's graphics. As long as it's 30 and up, I'm fine with that. My guess is, I'd be able to play most games at the native resolution at High settings.

I would still consider looking at other laptops, even if it does stretch your budget by $100. Also doesn't manual upgrades void the warranty?

I would follow Huracan's advice. Voiding the warranty on a new system would not be in your best interest. Not to mention the Lenovo Z510 is not easy when it comes to maintaining. You would have to remove the keyboard and a series of screws to remove the bottom tray and access the hardware, such as the Ram, Hard Drive, Battery, and fan..

Upgrading the RAM won't void the warranty as long as nothing breaks in the process. Any suggestions for a certain laptop model?

I saw a pretty good Asus laptop with an i7 processor but clocked 200 MHz higher than the Z510's processor and it has a GTX 850M with 2 GB DDR3 GPU. It's the Asus N550JK I think.

Why not check around some of the companies like HP ect, that still cater to those that wish to run windows 7 instead of windows 8.1
Most of them are usually found in the Business sections of the company. The you will not have to downgrade the OS, and even customize it on the website, so no manual removal of ram ect is needed.

Looks good.
Go for it.
You will be able to play most of the games in HD resolution.

If i were in your shoes, i would look for
- nvidio 750 family series and above..
- if in budget would look for 1080p screen even if the processor is i5 at good clockspeed.
- if you want to upgrade the ram, i would go to lenovo centre and would put the ram in front of them and put a seal over the ram opening just to be on safer side regarding warranty.
