Hello,

Now if I am using Adguard Desktop and have Adguard DNS set up using the protocol DNS over HTTPS in Adguard Desktop settings, do I need to use the Private DNS option in browsers like Vivaldi and Firefox as a fallback protection? Does having both enabled (Private DNS and Adguard Desktop DOH) cause any latency?

Hello,

If you have Adguard Desktop with DNS over HTTPS (DoH) already set up, it should be sufficient for your privacy and security needs. Using Private DNS in your browsers as a fallback is optional and may provide an extra layer of protection. However, having both enabled could potentially cause some latency due to the extra DNS queries, but this would likely be minimal and may not noticeably affect your browsing experience.

just test for (extended test) dns leaks to be sure no leaks are being caused in case the system is confused between which dns servers to use
I have tested using DNSLEAKTEST with Private DNS enabled and disabled, the same result with no leaks.
Explore AdGuard's advanced settings for DNS fallback options. It has the option to add another DNS as a fallback.
I have taken a close look at Adguard DNS settings and there is no such option.

Now I have a question. If I am using Private DNS in a browser and Adguard Desktop with DOH enabled, what will tke the priority?
According to Chatgpt,
When both AdGuard Desktop with DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and Chromium's Private DNS are enabled, the priority typically goes to the application that is handling the DNS resolution. In this case, AdGuard will take priority over Chromium's Private DNS settings.

Here's how it generally works:

1. **AdGuard Desktop**: Since it is a local application that intercepts DNS queries and uses its own DoH configuration, it will handle DNS requests first. This means that any DNS queries made by applications, including Chromium, will be processed by AdGuard.

2. **Chromium's Private DNS**: If AdGuard is not running or if there are specific configurations that direct DNS queries to Chromium's Private DNS, then Chromium will use its own settings. However, this is less common when AdGuard is actively managing DNS.

In summary, AdGuard will take priority, and its settings will be used for DNS resolution as long as it is running and configured correctly.

No need to have private DNS enabled in all apps + AdGuard + Windows. I'd recommend you just to enable it in Windows settings and it will apply to all apps which use internet connection. That's if you want DNS-over-HTTPS. If you want to use other protocol you'll have to use just AdGuard software.

Adding custom DNS and use the built in DNS over HTTPS in Windows 11 settings never worked for me. Browsers were using my ISP DNS though I have DOH enabled in Windows settings. That is why I resorted to Private DNS and Adguard Desktop.

Weird. It always works in my case. Are you sure you set it up correctly?

Yes I followed the setup instructions on my NextDNS dashboard. Using the desktop client of NextDNS fixes the issue. In the same way using Private DNS in browser settings fixes it. Now I am using Adguard Desktop and everything is working as intended.

AdGuard desktop advanced settings offer multiple options to configure fallback DNS or secure DNS. The latest AdGuard desktop version worked well when I tested it. Look at the help files.

Whatever DNS you set in AdGuard will be used system-wide including browsers. But if you still setup DNS invidually in browsers in case you want a different DNS for your browser only, then AdGuard would honor that.
Regarding fallback DNS setting in ADG Windows, here it is. By default, it is set to System DNS as fallback, but I have disabled fallback DNS on mine to prevent potential DNS leakage.

@SeriousHoax, if I disable AdGuard using the browser assistant, will it disable only the ad filtering or all the features, including DNS protection? I'm asking because I don't have AdGuard Desktop installed right now.
Good question. I'll have to check. I have it installed but not using it at the moment. I'll let you know.
