I have a refurbished Windows 2.6.1.7601 (Service Pack 1), GTX 560M..I've seen this happen a few times over the last couple years. Upon booting up my computer it has the appearance of safe mode where all my icons are missing and everything's grey colored, etc. (except it's not, I just turned it on normally) and gives me some long error plus a small notification on the lower right side that says "failed to connect to a windows service". I've seen this happen a few times over the last couple years and restarting it always fixes it. This month, it has happened three times, strangly. Does anyone know why this occurs and would this just be hardware related or malware? Thanks

Hello,

Let's check if you have infection present.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

I've downloaded farbar before and used it but now when I attempt to download it, it says "Windows cannot access the specific device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item" (I am the admin on the computer). And then I get a notification from Norton saying it's not safe and has been removed.

All tools we use here are perfectly safe and do not contain malware. Disable Norton and download and run it again.

I do not see signs of malware on your PC. I see some leftovers from IOBIT I would like to clean:

FRST.gif
Fix with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

This fix was created for this user for use on that particular machine.

Running it on another one may cause damage and render the system unstable.

Download attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop:

Both files, FRST and fixlist.txt have to be in the same location or the fix will not work!

  • Right-click on
    FRST.gif
    icon and select
    RunAsAdmin.jpg
Run as Administrator to start the tool.
(XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File).
  • Press the Fix button just once and wait.
  • If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  • When finished FRST will generate a log on the Desktop, called Fixlog.txt.

Please attach it to your reply.

it's running fine, so i assume the occasional appearance of safe mode upon booting up normally with a windows service error must be related to something else then?
