Really That Bad

Since I have used nothing but NIS for the past 2 years and havent used anything else. Is AVG Free really that bad? Matt from rM reviewed it and it did horribly. Just wondering if any of you have inputs so I can tell my customers. From what I know its junk.

Most of the infected PCs I've seen had it installed...

Not really a good indicator, but it does make one distrust it.

AVG is bad at detecting new virii, and when you're infected, most of the virusses manage to either disable AVG or just keep of it's radar. Therefor (and for the fact that it is imo heavy on recources) I don't really like the app.

Just did a custom install of AVG Free Edition (64-bit) without all the extra features such as:
- Email Scanner
- LinkScanner
- ID Protection

Without those listed above it runs with 5 processes and average of 9,000K RAM (according to Task Manager).

Failed to detect these of about 5 samples.

Just know wonder that AVG adds with some features especially the identity protection but yet Matt's review is not a good to see as it failed.

Avg has always had more negative than good reviews....... it took them a couple of years to actually add Rootkit protection... At the time of MSE 1.0 release they finally added it in there 2011 version.

I really can't say i like something about AVG. Your costumers are better protected with Avira or Avast depends on taste. On all my costumers i installed Avast with minor adjustments and sometimes on very old systems i do not install modules like p2p scanner module and mail scanner module cause they use mostly Yahoo mail.

I removed it two or three times today alone, I truly would never suggest it to anyone but another competing repair shop...lol.

The latest AVG 2012 seem to be quite good. I've had my issues in the past, but this new version is stable, effective and doesn't bog my system down. It also passed the latest VB100 (http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archive/test?recent=1) when Avast, Emsisoft and Vipre failed.

That doesn't determine how well it protect you form unknown malware. Plus I don't like how they give away their rewards

I will have to agree, remember AV tests just valid to the samples used not to malware you may be exposed to.

Just because one product does better on an AV test doesn't mean it will protect you any better than another product. Although AVG has showed much improvements this year, I wouldn't say it was any better than other products that failed on this VB test.

Agree with the others...don't rest everything on one test. Remember, the RAP average (Virus Bulletin) for June-December 2011 had Emsisoft at the top. Like so many say, if it works well for you and you like it...that's most of the battle!:shy:
