A Wall Street Journal story today describes how repressive governments in the middle east often use products from US technology firms to implement their Internet filtering and access control.
Vendors don't seem proud of the situation. NetSweeper takes the attitude that they can't control how customers will use their products. Websense says that it is their policy not to sell to governments or ISPs for the purpose of filtering, but "[O]n rare occasion things can slip through the cracks."
