Russian secret services claim that their country was the victim of an attack that would hit twenty targets with impressive speed. A statement which is involved in a heated political climate with the Democratic Party candidate Hillary Clinton.
The former KGB is categorical: Russia was the target of a virus whose operation approaches a "well-known cyber-espionage." If the FSB gives no details about the alleged or identified sponsors of this attack, he said it was "planned and conducted in a professional manner," especially because it was targeting "important infrastructures of the country."
What damage has really suffered Russia during this attack ? The FSB did not say. He stated however that the offending software was able to turn on the cameras and microphones of infected machines, take screenshots and record what was typed.
If Russia does not point any fingers, eyes will naturally turn to the United States. The Democratic Party of President Obama and candidate Hillary Clinton was indeed recently suffered a leak of sensitive documents relayed by WikiLeaks. The source of the leak has not been clearly identified, but President Clinton campaign said heavy suspicions focused on the Russian state, which wanted to indirectly support the candidate Trump.
Nevertheless, these cases show how political and cyber-espionage may be closely related, as was the case in 2010 with Stuxnet, a virus that was designed to target the Iranian centrifuges.
