To be honest I liked vipre but the av test's have been pretty mediocre

Well i used KIS 2013 on my Windows 7 64 bit before. Maybe some software is making a conflict with your settings :-/

I don't think so..I was using 2013 up till a few days ago then switched to 2014...That's when the trouble started..
