Interesting discussion on the technical details of the alleged Russian hacking of the DNC. The key take away from the security expert, Steve Gibson, is that at a minimum they are recording all internet traffic that enters the US and probably most domestic traffic as well. End to end encryption is doing very little to prevent them from spying. (I'm summarizing of course).

So Gibson is just waking up to what many among us already knew... Once again, get those notepads and pencils out for your really important data.

The analogy of intelligence technology being to the level of where the entire world is on a big screen TV, and there are just a few tiny black dots, which are the people using heavy encryption and secured devices. Guess where the eyes focus? They don't like black dots...

I think going forward, there are two considerations;

Chaff - blinded by the light.. People putting out so much 'garbage' to the world that their normal (and secure) activities are masked among billions of bits of junk data that can't be parsed with any reasonable assurances. For example if your home has 1-3 MILLION Google searches that are automated on a Anti-Phorm machine, parsing out the real searches/activity becomes a monumental task.

Hiding in plain site - smart people wanting privacy may start to use alternative methods of hiding by simply presenting the 'image' of being a normal good guy tax paying citizen whilst hiding sensitive/secure/private data in plain sight. To do this requires planning but you'd likely (and quickly) fall off the radar of suspicion, at least from active surveillance. Maybe use those insecure emails everyone else uses. Use Cylance, Norton, McAfee, whatever. Present the image of a clueless normal person while carefully masking your private/sensitive activity in ways that aren't so obvious.

It all depends on how much you care I guess. :unsure:
