Series of blog posts on the performance effect the security solutions have on PC performance, performed by TuneUp and posted on their blog.

Security suites are designed to detect and remove threats from PCs. However, by protecting PCs’ file systems and memory in real time, this sort of protection comes at the cost of performance, and many users value performance as much as security protection.

This series of blog posts helps you find out which security solutions have the most detrimental effect on overall system performance, boot performance, and resource utilization.

Performance Shootout

P.S. Avast was tested on August 10 and its results are available in this post

Better performance is something that I gained when I dropped using a real time
antivirus. Its a total different story how the machine performs by running low
on security applications running real time. Since the day that I stopped using
scanners, I have not heard cries coming from the inside of my machine and my
CPU is at 0 when in idle. The only time that is at about 40/50% is when I am
using Youtube. During regular surfing, like coming here, my CPU is at 2%.

Anybody wants better performance, drop down the real timers and you ll see
a better and healthier machine working. Too many installing/uninstalling of
security applications would make a machines performace go down hill.
I think, users can find a balanced and secure setup without using too much.
Once found, people should stay put with it as too many changes to the PC
are not healthy.

Just my thoughts, about......performance.

Impressed by ESET, but can never be sure unless you try it for yourself.

I'm waiting for the F-Secure test, tried the latest beta last night, and it's very light and responsive, should most probably mix it with ESET and NIS in terms of impact.

Exactly, when they install a suite surely they will not noticed the slowdown, in fact the performance will actually same like without the AV.

Performance tests really don't mean much to me.
I have read numerous performance tests in the past but when I try the software on my systems, I get different results.
You can't apply results of a performance test to real world environments.

Each user and system will have difference results. What runs heavy or light on a system can vary. The best example that I can think of is ZoneAlam Security Suite.
Runs super light on some systems but on others is run like a heavy bloatware.

The only way that you can get the best performance results is try them on your system for several weeks. Some may start off as light and eventually get heavier whereas others may start off heavy and get lighter.

Thanks.:D

in my opinion; not all, not impact on the perforamance. such as; norton, avast, trend micro (even using a lot of ram), panda, avira, f-secure. i have tested their (not at VM, otherwise at real machine).
