Should I Use PeerBlock?

I downloaded PeerBlock just yesterday and I am wondering do I need it at all. I signed up for two of the four or five lists that PeerBlock offered. Will this slow down my internet or download and upload speed? I also read here and there that PeerBlock is not something you must have and that there is not much of using it. Is this true? Should I use PeerBlock? Does it give me another layer of protection?

Correct me if I'm wrong but that software haven't had an update for over 4 years. I would suggest that you simply use a VPN instead of your own choice and uninstall PeerBlock.
