Smartphones Battle for the Best Security Feature-

Future iPhones might collect fingerprints, photos of thieves:

SOURCE: appleinsider.com (ARTICLE DATE: 25th Aug 2016)

An Apple patent application published on Thursday describes a method of storing an unauthorized user's biometric information, which can help strengthen security management or assist in device recovery and criminal prosecution in the case of a theft...

As published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Apple's invention covering "Biometric capture for unauthorized user identification" details the simple but brilliant — and legally fuzzy — idea of using an iPhone or iPad's Touch ID module, camera and other sensors to capture and store information about a potential thief.

In practice, the proactive security system works in much the same way as existing Touch ID verification processes.

Currently, users have five attempts to unlock iPhone or iPad with Touch ID before the device defaults to a 6-digit passcode or custom alphanumeric code. Ten failed passcode attempts results in a "cool down" period or a complete data wipe, depending on user settings. Further, passcodes are required after restarting the device, after more than 48 hours has elapsed between unlocks and when an owner wants to manage Touch ID and Passcode device settings.

Apple's patent is also governed by device triggers, though different constraints might be applied to unauthorized user data aggregation. For example, in one embodiment a single failed authentication triggers the immediate capture of fingerprint data and a picture of the user...

Are Iris Scanners the Safest Security Measures in Phones?:
SOURCE: wccftech.com (ARTICLE DATE: 24th Aug 2016)

With Galaxy Note 7 being the first smartphone to possess a workable iris scanner, Samsung has laid emphasis to the fact that iris scanners are the securest of components to be present inside mobile devices right now...

Samsung Claims That Information From Iris Scanners Disappears in Just Four Seconds, Making It Extremely Difficult to Steal Crucial Information

Samsung explained that it’s impossible to use DNA information on portable devices such as smartphones.

“Mucus and blood from inside a mouth need to be collected to obtain information about one’s DNA. Because it takes more than an hour to analyze this information, it is realistically impossible to use DNA information on portable devices. Even when one steals a smartphone and obtains iris information, he or she will not have an access to a smartphone if a smartphone is not authenticated by the actual user. Iris information can be clearly erased through a deleting process when one is trying to purchase a used smartphone.”

The information between both the left and right eye are different, so it will be difficult to gain information from different irises. Samsung has also reported that while iris scanners will be incorporated inside future flagship smartphones, mid-rangers are also going to be released packing these security buffed features..

Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 Vs BlackBerry's DTEK50 Vs Sirin's Solarin:
SOURCE: techradar.com (ARTICLE DATE: 19th Aug 2016)

Samsung's recently launched Galaxy Note 7, BlackBerry's new DTEK50 and plucky up-start Sirin's Solarin phone all make the claim to be the most secure Android phone you can buy...

Conor Pierce, Vice President of IT and Mobile at Samsung UK told TechRadar, "Iris scanning delivers a hundred times more secure security than a fingerprint and a more reliable security solution on your device.
"That coupled with the Knox solution, it [the Galaxy Note 7] is the most secure device you can have."
The defence-grade Knox security platform recently received the most "strong" ratings of any mobile security platform in Gartner's 'Mobile Device Security: A Comparison of Platforms' study."

When asked if the Galaxy Note 7 is more secure than the BlackBerry DTEK50, Pierce confirmed Samsung believes it is. He cited the combination of its Knox security software and iris scanning tech as offering military grade security.

When TechRadar put Samsung's claims to BlackBerry, the Canadian firm stood by its title.

A BlackBerry spokesperson told TechRadar, "The DTEK50 has many security advantages over Knox, including rapid patching, the DTEK application, and platform hardening features such as zygote ASLR.
The DTEK 50 has your data encrypted to start with, but then a feature within the DTEK app allows you to set up "secure start-up" which uses your phone screen to strengthen the encryption.

Solarin offers a unique security service that BlackBerry and Samsung do not, but you'll need to pay for it.
A spokesperson for Solarin told TechRadar its "unique solution provides two levels of security in order to meet the needs of our customers, as security features are only effective if deployed and not cumbersome to the user."

"Solarin is protected by Zimperium state-of-the-art threat protection, maintained by behaviour-based analytics.
"We consider these to be the most effective method of real-time defense, as they work by identifying unusual behavior and taking real-time action to guard your private information, as opposed to tolerating the delay necessary for a security breach to be identified, logged, recognized and subsequent response deployed."..

Actually both components mentioned on different brands are helpful. I will take an example which is real and why needing it, a news in Philippines struck where a person manage to locate the Iphone through Find my Phone mechanism; forunately his settings where the camera will automatically upload pictures on his Dropbox manage to reveal the thief face.
