Software - The Game Changers

I'd be interested to hear people's suggestions on security software over the years that they feel has been a game changer, either because it significantly raised the bar for its particular type or because it took a different approach to what had previously been the norm. Or any other reasons you may have for a product to qualify as a game changer.

And do you think there are any present day game changers that fit either of these categories? For me I think Zemana Antimalware (or now the new improved all-in-one ZAL) may qualify for the first category, surpassing the long time go-to antimalware product for many people, the excellent Malwarebytes Antimalware.

For the second category, possibly VoodooShield. It may not be completely original but to me it seems to have a slightly different take on the traditional anti-executable.

For windows I would have to say VS, Dan dropped a bomb on the traditional AV market,
some of them don't like him too much for that shakeup .
For the Linux world, I am still learning but would say from a
security standpoint ClamAV ?

I couldn't agree more, and I've no doubt some of the established companies aren't too keen on him. Dan is an innovator who's taken a fresh look at things and we are the beneficiaries, and he deserves all the success he has. It seems pretty apparent he's got a winner on his hands.

Agree 100%. VS is already an excellent layer of security in it's own right, but Dan has plans to take it further, which will upset the AV/AM big boys even more . We as consumers can only benefit from his, unrelenting, drive and determination to make VS the best it can be.

For me, AppGuard has an excellent technology, despite that it may not be so popular to be labeled as "game changer".

Game changer: Virtualization and Anti-exe/restriction programs because traditional signatures are no longer usable and users should understand clearly the important pop-ups description alongside of few maintenance.

Although some techniques that can clearly bypass however it's already been fixed/reported.

For me it'd be RollBack Rx. With me and my life, I'm very busy and always running around doing stuff so I don't have the time to sit down and run a full backup. Rollback is fast and while I've had a few issues with it, it's still something new and exciting in terms of backing up your system in a more time efficient way.

None changed the game. Sure lots of security software improved but i don't see anything revolutionary that makes everything else irrelevant and useless without compromise.

Have to agree with @SHvFl there are a lot of compromise when it comes to the increased protection like VS, like the additional dialogue boxes every time you install or update a programme.

Obsolete trend: real time AVs
Old trend: IPS (HIPS,BB, anti-exe, etc..)
Actual trend: light/full virtualization & isolation (sandbox, VM, redirection softs,etc...)
Incoming trend (and wannabe game-changer): AI-based AV engines

Real game changer: None.

the game changer will be what MS (and in a more complex level, Linux Qubes) is actually trying to do: compartmentalization of the OS by virtualization . When they will achieve this state , security products will be useless.
