  • Single Spotify Premium plans are unaffected
  • USA - Spotify Family $14.99 to $15.99
  • UK & Europe - Spotify Student £4.99 to £5.99 / €5.99
  • UK & Europe - Spotify Duo £12.99 to £13.99 / €12.99
  • UK & Europe - Spotify Family £14.99 to £15.99 / €17.99
Spotify is increasing the price of many of its subscriptions this week across the UK and parts of Europe, with the US seeing a hike to Family plans. Subscribers have started to receive emails informing them of the changes, and they will affect Student, Duo, and Family plans across parts of Europe and the UK, and Family subscriptions in the US from April 30th. Single Spotify Premium subscriptions are unaffected.

Spotify confirmed the increases in a statement to The Verge, and it’s likely we’ll see US pricing changes shortly, too. “We offer a variety of subscription plans tailored to our users’ needs, and we occasionally update our prices to reflect local macroeconomic factors and meet market demands while offering an unparalleled service,” says a Spotify spokesperson.

Spotify’s price increases come just months after the company revealed it now has more than 150 million subscribers. Despite this, Spotify still made a loss of €125 million in the recent quarter, and average revenue per user also fell by 8 percent.

The virtual card I use to pay Spotify, has a monthly limit only 1cent higher than the current price. So they won't get it from me... I will then decide if it's worth it.

I hope that the artists get a better cut after this price increase. The fact that Spotify is still recording a loss appears to be how their and similar business models work. Its as if there is a race to build up the biggest loss while blowing the opposition out of the water, the paying hedge funds and other funders dividends when they have a monopoly, or near as one. I can't get my ahead around it, which is probably why I spend time working in IT rather than business management or finance! As an afterthought I'm not sure that i want to get my head around it.
