A close relative of mine does not have any real time protection in her PC for many years..Maybe she runs MSE, I am not sure.. Of course she has computer knowledge, she is not novice but not geek also. She surfs reasonably and recently I checked her PC with viruses using hitman pro.. It found only one infected exe in C drive. I had scanned with Avira about 2 years ago also, and it did not find anything. Based on her words she had malware that affected her everyday tasks (what it was noticed easily) one or two times since about 2003 that she uses a Computer.. Of course she has formatted and reinstalled Windows many times until some years ago but the reason was rarely related to malware issues. From that time and after, there have been 2 or 3 years without formatting..
The whole thing seems a bit weird to me.. Or she had malware and did not notice it, Or she had malware that actually did not do anything serious (damage, spying), or.. the whole story about the big amount of malware that spreads to people's PC's and the usual consequences it's said for them to have, is crap.
But I won't risk it xD
