Back when computer viruses were actually viruses and did not care about your money or files...

Quickly and efficiently, data was just gone (maybe not forever, but it was surely inaccessible by regular means).

I think back then viruses didn't care much about the money, because Antivirus software were young and free

Computer viruses before are definitely an instrument for such terrible attack, its been well planned and organized to link in such state where many people have mediocre knowledge in computer. + in the sense internet connectivity are not well active and cannot afford better speed.

Now, computer viruses may act the same way but with money involved hence sometimes it can use for corruption.
