Source: What could 'the next generation of Windows' actually mean?
Earlier this week, Microsoft's chief product officer Panos Panay dropped a brief yet tantalizing tease that something big is on the way for Windows by referring to what's next as "the next generation of Windows." Microsoft hasn't used terminology like that since the debut of Windows 10 in 2015, and that was because Windows 10 was a new operating system replacing the previous one, backed by a huge marketing campaign focused on getting users to upgrade to the shiny new Windows.

  • Is it Sun Valley?
  • Is it Windows 10X?
  • Is it a marketing strategy?
  • From the comments comes "EdgeOS"... "Surface Pro"...
What do you think the Next Generation of Windows means?

While this most likely refers to the upcoming Sun Valley update for Windows 10 – that aims to bring a visual refresh to the OS –, what’s interesting is that Nadella teased that he has been self-hosting the update for several months, adding that he is “incredibly excited about the next generation of Windows”. This echoes what Microsoft’s Panos Panay said during a brief fireside chat at the spring Ignite conference earlier this year. However, what’s different between then and now is that the firm was working on a true next-generation Windows version called Windows 10X, which is now seemingly cancelled, with focus shifting to Windows 10.

Microsoft is planning to detail its “next generation of Windows” at an event later this month. The software giant has started sending invites to media for a Windows event on June 24th. Both Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and chief product officer Panos Panay will be presenting at the Windows event. Microsoft’s Windows event will start at 11AM ET / 8AM PT on June 24th.

The invite comes just a week after Nadella teased a “next generation of Windows” announcement. Microsoft is expected to detail its next significant changes to Windows, and they will likely include a number of visual enhancements. We’re expecting to see some significant UI changes to Windows under something codenamed “Sun Valley.” Microsoft’s event invite even appears to tease a new Windows logo.

I'm sure they will make some changes to the UI, but Microsoft should be very careful with the Start menu.
The UI changes is Sun Valley.

If Android, iOS and macOS are anything to go by, then who needs a Start Menu. Windows Start Menu is already dated by designed and functionality.

I think the Start Menu is a feature that provides compatibility for many years of users. Even a small change in win8 has heard the negative opinions of many users. If Microsoft wants to make a big change to Windows, I think the Start menu and explorer specs could be a shackle.
