Settled for Bitdefender after playing around with Malwarebytes Premium. Would have gone with Malwarebytes but their UI redesign is unwelcoming and focused on upselling their VPN with no way to turn it off. Bitdefender at least gave me the option to completely uninstall the VPN component even though I wish we would have the option to not install it in the first place.
Even Bitdefender is pissing me off because all the "security recommendations" are just them trying to push you to buy their VPN or Identity Protection. It's ridiculous and once my 2 year subscription is done I will most likely not use an AV on macOS anymore because of what the industry has become and because Apple's built-in AV has become magnitudes more powerful over the past few years.

And so it goes, on and on, down the upsell rabbit hole. Too many users are airheads when it comes to security. I would do the same as you with the built-in security. You know me and my 1st principle, so I won't repeat it here.

You can disable all that in the settings:

That's interesting. The macOS version does not provide nearly as many options and that particular option was nowhere to be found in any of the tabs. The two toggles I did disable don't change the fact that Autopilot Recommendations will continue to upsell VPN and Identity protection. And not only that, Recommendations now complains that I have turned off their marketing notifications...

Which further goes to show that this was an intentional design decisions to not give people on mac an option to turn it off because they think Apple users have money to waste on stupid things. I really dislike where this industry is going.

You have to open a Support Ticket and complain. Then you have to go to the Bitdefender Community Forums and keep complaining. If you do that, eventually they will remedy this "mistake" on Mac.

For Bitdefender, complaints work but it takes time - which is to be expected. Support that is needed does not work. Bitdefender has the worst support.

After coming across an alluring discount more recently, I've also migrated to ESET Premium, which appears to be a popular alternative.

I decided that it was a satisfying intersection of performance and reliability. I'm keeping it simple these days. It feels light as a feather!
