Welcome here :)
If you use USB often, maybe you should consider to use MC Shield USB Anti-Malware Tool.
and I want to recommend you µBlock which does the all job of Ghostery and Adguard, on my side. It is very light on browser RAM usage and you can use filters whatever you want. It also supports HOST files.
By the way, maybe you want to try HTTPS Everywhere to make your connections secure.

The others looks good, thanks for sharing your config :)

Hello and welcome,
Here are two settings that you may want to enable/check. to Avast Free : )
1.Enable PUP Detection:
A PUP (potentially unwanted program) is a program that may be unwanted, such as spyware, despite the possibility that users consented to download it. This usually includes: toolbars, browser hijackers or adware (ad-supported software)
  1. Open Avast, click on Settings, then on Active Protection and click on the gear next to the Files System.
  2. In the "Sensitivity", select "Scan for potentially unwanted software (PUPs)".

Next, you will need to do the same for the Web Shield so lets do it.
Click on Settings, then on Active Protection and click on the gear next to the Web Shield. Then select Sensitivity and check "Scan for potentially unwanted software (PUPs)".

2. Enable Warn when downloading files with poor reputation.
In the Web Shield field, you can enable "Warn when downloading files with poor reputation", and it does what it says.. it will warn you when you are downloading a file with a low reputation...
To enable it, click on Settings, then on Active Protection and click on the gear next to the Files System. Then select Web Shield and check Warn when downloading files with poor reputation..

And I always browse in sandboxed google chrome.Thank you.
This with Avast Free will give you a 99,9% protection from malware! Awesome security config!

thank you very much,I will use the ublock.I knew about https everywhere add on but did not installed it because avast web shield can not scan https sites(correct me if I am wrong). And if avast web shield can not work then the malware will get a chance to install it self on my machine. That is why I am afraid of installing it.

I do not know how Avast webshield extension works but HTTPS Everywhere makes your communications secure (encrypted) with mojaor websites (Google, some APIs etc.). Maybe your avast does not scan https websites but most of https websites do not contain malicious. Lets assume they have malicious files that Avast knew it but cannot scan because of https. You downloaded it and your real-time protection will detect.
Working style of HTTPS Everywhere is different so no need to worry about to add this extension to your Chrome and Firefox or any other browser you like.

Hi @titan1 . I'd stumbled upon your configuration while searching our fascinating site and learned how to harden the settings on Avast! which protects our own Windows 8.1 system!:p (Thanks @Jack !:D)
I support the valuable tips offered here for your system.

In order to activate the third party cookie blocker in Chrome, find it under "Settings".
  1. Scroll down to the bottom, & <click> Advanced Settings
  2. Beneath "Privacy" <click> Content settings
chrome-content-settings-png.22523

3. Check the box "Block third party cookies and site data".
  • Edit: Rather than the "Allow local data.." I now mark "Keep local data only until you quit your browser" for greater privacy.:)

The 2015 version of avast has really disappointed me.So I switched back to MSE for the time being.Soon I will going to try Bitdefnder total security. The avast 2015 was slowing my laptop,Don't know why.And I am not bothering now what happened with it.

Welcome. Your configuration is ok. My only advise is to eliminate some of the extensions/plugins as some of them does the same thing. For example Ad Guard/uBlock and Webutation/WOT :)

Hi titan1, whether you prefer choosing a free or paid AV program, you can try any number of versions (one at a time) in order to get a feel for which would work best on your unique system. Most paid AVs offer 30 day trials. Among the paid favorites recommended by staff and members more knowledgeable & experienced than myself is ESET. We moved up from MSE, and now use ESET NOD 32 on the Windows 7 system in our home.

I browsed back over some of the advice given, not wishing to perform my impression of a broken record (can you remember vinyl?:p).
Malwarebytes.org offers a free Anti-Exploit which protects your Chrome browser & apps from this type of vulnerability.

Btw, have you looked into exterminator20 's tip on some form of back up?
