TMOG - TaskManager

Now, this is a true Task Manager:
created by a veteran from Microsoft
That appears to be a third-party Task Manager alternative, but I cannot independently verify the “Microsoft veteran” claim or determine whether the download is safe from the link alone.

Before installing it, consider:

  • Check whether the project provides a verifiable developer identity, source code, changelog, and privacy policy.
  • Scan the downloaded file with reputable security software and submit its hash or sample to VirusTotal.
  • Review its digital signature and ensure it is downloaded only from the official project domain.
  • Create a restore point or test it in a virtual machine first, especially if it requires administrator privileges.

It may offer useful features beyond Windows Task Manager, but third-party system utilities should be evaluated carefully because they operate with extensive system visibility and sometimes elevated privileges.

In 1994, Dave Plummer wrote the original Windows Task Manager. Three decades later, he has rebuilt the idea for modern hardware as Task Manager OG.

That context is relevant: Dave Plummer is known for creating the original Windows Task Manager while working at Microsoft, and Task Manager OG is presented as his modern successor project.

However, a legitimate developer or a blocked download are not mutually exclusive. A security product may block a new or uncommon utility because of low reputation, unsigned code, unusual behavior, or heuristic detection. The block alone does not prove that the program is malicious, but it should not be bypassed without verification.

Recommended checks

  • Confirm that the download came from the official project domain: TMOG — Your whole machine, at a glance.
  • Check the file’s publisher, digital signature, SHA-256 hash, and VirusTotal results.
  • Record the exact security-product detection name; generic labels such as “suspicious” or “PUA” have different meanings than a specific malware detection.
  • Do not disable antivirus protection merely to install it. Wait for the developer or security vendor to clarify a false positive if the file is blocked.

The author’s identity makes the project more credible, but the individual executable still needs to be verified independently.

Plummer's YouTube with 1.2 million subscribers links to GitHub with 1.8k subscribers, which links to this app, so it is probably legit.
Blocked as suspicious
Indeed, even if it is made by MS engineer, it does not guarantee anything. It is like webpages listing software as MS certified.
The project is based on Process Explorer, so technically yes, he is behind it, but it is not a new software, it is the same old with a new GUI.
The webpage lacks any Contact and TOS. That Privacy & free-edition promise seems like a joke. Anyway, my DNS blocks it as NRD, so we will see.

What actually makes me tingle is Windows Task Manager for MacOS and Linux. Not sure what to make of this, it seems totally random, like you wake up and make a coffee. 🤔
