These smartphones are running out-dated versions of the Android OS, version 2.3.3 or less. That's the problem with buying smartphones, their OS is replaced on new hardware, but can be expensive (since it's usually tied to a contract) - Unless you can upgrade for free, or for a small fee.

I found this for Samsung Galaxy S users: http://pages.samsung.com/ca/androidupgrade/English/

Does this harm the phone in any way?

Very interesting report, this doesn't seem to be an actual Android OS problem , if anyone can be hold responsible for this security vulnerability then the individual hardware vendors along with their different carriers have the entire guilt.

Well this is not good. I currently have a HTC Wildfire, and by looking at this, might have to save up for new phone, or I just have to be aware what sites I go to.

Thanks for letting us know PenTester :)

Wait, my father's phone is running Android 2.3.3 and when I want to upgrade the firmware using Samsung Kies, it will say that I am using the latest firmware. Why?

Not every android phone allow's you to upgrade the version.

Had that problem with my HTC. Although in the course of the week it sort of got wet and well it is unusable.

Lucky I still got my BB. Tempted to go to iPhone but well price is pricey

Depends on the phone, country and service provider. In my Samsung Galaxy S1, 2.3.4 is the latest version. I think only Samsung Nexus has version 4.

unless you root it i think.

That's what I had to do as the latest it said I could have is 2.1update. Once I rooted it I clean installed the latest Cyanogen Nightly 7 mod which is Android 2.3.7 and it runs excellent on my phone. You just got to make sure the ROM is supported for your model and type of phone as no ROM is for every phone.

Well getting root my wildfire was a pain in the ... I had to use something called Alpharev X to turn HTC's self defence off Called HBOOT wich basically wont allow you to root and downgrade the phone or upgrade the Android OS. in mycase downgrade back to 2.1 so i could flash CM7
