A few times during shut-down my parent’s PC has displayed a blue screen with a message stating “Getting Windows Ready Don't Turn off Your Computer.” Nothing appears to happen and then about 2 hours later it shuts down. I’ve also noticed that I cannot get windows updates to work. The update gets to 20% and then (0x80073701) error appears.

After some searching I carried out the following fixes which haven’t worked;

Windows Update Troubleshooter

Restart Windows Update services

Reset Winsock component

Flush DNS cache

I followed these instructions; Reset Windows Update in Windows 10

I also followed these instructions;
I’d like this PC to continue working until the end of the year when hopefully I will have built a new PC.

Any help is much appreciated.

It seems like you've tried a lot of solutions already. However, you might want to try the System File Checker (SFC) tool and the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool. These can fix any corrupted system files that might be causing the issue. If these don't work, a clean install of Windows might be necessary. Remember to back up all important files before doing so.

There are suggestions here. Just don't install any of their software.
