Vipre is a relatively well-known American antivirus for geeks.
Formerly with Sunbelt, then GFI, Vipre was taken over by ThreatTrack several years ago and added Bitdefender's engine alongside its own.
The software has evolved little over the years, but let's see how effective it still is.

User interface :
The interface is clear but rather complicated for a novice.
Even if Vipre is fairly self-explanatory, the novice can get lost in the configuration (for example, protection against unknown threats is not activated by default... I activated it for the test).
In terms of RAM consumption, Vipre is very light.

Web protection: 13/13
Vipre has blocked all malicious links.

Fake crack : 1/1
Vipre blocks all files dropped by the fake crack.

Malware Pack : Remaining 15 files out of 141.
The anti-malware engine is relatively effective, since it combines its own with Bitdefender's.
In terms of execution, Vipre blocks several installations but does not always display an alert.
Only one Trojan remains in memory.

Final scan :
Vipre : 0
NPE : 4
KVRT : 0

Final opinion:

Vipre offers effective protection by combining its technologies with those of Bitdefender.
My only regret is that it doesn't always alert you, and can sometimes slow down your surfing experience as it scans the page in depth.
The settings can be confusing for novices, and although Vipre provides explanations, they're not always easy to understand.
Only 1 Trojan remains in memory at the end of the test, and the machine is easily disinfected.
Vipre is recommendable.

Despite the fact that the product is 90% Bitdefender (Anti-Malware SDK, ATC SDK, Network Interception SDK and even Email Security SDK), and despite the very infrequent updates, Vipre is a solid product. The Ultimate Security Bundle includes auto-patch, VPN and privacy cleaner/controller for $39 (5 devices). At this price, Vipre leaves very little to be desired.

I wonder how could it feel much lighter than BD on my system if its just a rebrand?

It even runs the Bitdefender Photon. It’s all about the configuration of the engines. Bitdefender has one way of running them, OEMs have their own. The engine is sitting there, but it’s up to Vipre to decide when and how it will be called.

It is not a rebrand per sè, the firewall, exploit prevention and the UI belong to Vipre. Also, I remember the Web Blocking (Network Interceptor) was implemented in a slightly better way than Bitdefender, it was more active when attempting to download malware. Haven’t tried it recently and don’t remember the details.

The updates were also not such a slow nuisance.

Many products have download detection abilities, hence why I keep stating products not being fully tested. It is no different then back when the users here thought right click context menu scanning was testing a product and I kept on them about the difference of static and dynamic testing which tested more of the products abilities. This is fundamentally important as claims of products missing samples or failing are prevalent here without proper testing. Users make decisions based upon these claims as well as it affecting businesses let alone how it reflects on this forum.

Just saying.

Wow massive cudos. It used to suck more than removing the poison from a snake bite.

The smart ones use a sawer extractor instead of chancing ingesting venom. 🤪
Yeah assuming you got one. Fcking Arizona ratllers have evolved to have a silent rattle. Mainly because the ones that could be heard were culled. Only the silent mutation ones were saved. So we caused our own problems. But I digress. And honestly a ratller is the kindest of all snakes. At least it tells you to back away vs jus stricking.

Yeah or those YouTube experts that pass judgments based on VT scan results. Like honestly wtf?! What's worse than no information? Totally erroneous one.

I'm a always prepared "have multiple contingencies" kinda guy. This stated, I'm the kind of guy that keeps first aid in the vehicle, backpack for hiking and at the house. Part of that first aid is snake bite kits. Even in the mid-west there are a few type of rattlers, and of course cotton mouths.
