I'm Jack and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:
  • I will start working on your malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.


Before we start:
Please be aware that removing malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

STEP 1 : Run a scan with Combofix
Please read and follow very carefully the below instructions
 
Download ComboFix from one of the following locations: 

COMBOFIX DOWNLOAD LINK #1 (This link will automatically download Combofix on your computer)
COMBOFIX DOWNLOAD LINK #2  (This link will automatically download Combofix on your computer)
 
VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

<li>Close any open browsers.</li>
<li>Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

How to run the Combofix scan :
  1. Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  2. Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks
  3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. 
    [*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:
<ol><li> Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.</li>
<li> Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.</li>
<li>  If after the reboot you get errors about programms being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.</li></ol>

Hi,
Combofix ran without any problems.

Windows Update no longer shows the Windows Defender update that I couldn't load yesterday. Assume this is because I haven't re-started Windows Defender.

Attempted to restart Windows Defender (to see if Windows Update would work) via Control Panel, Security. Now get an error message - Windows Defender - Application failed to initialise 0x800106ba

STEP 1: Run a HitmanPro scan

<li>Push the <>Start</> button.</li>
<li>ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.</li>
<li>When the scan completes, push <>List of found threats</></li>
<li>Push <>Export to Text file </> and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as <>ESET Scan</>. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.Note - when ESET doesn't find any threats, no report will be created.</li>

STEP 4: Run Windows Repair All in One

<li>Double-click <>tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio.zip</> and extract the <>Tweaking.com - Windows Repair</> folder to your desktop.</li>
<li>Now open this folder and double-click <>Repair_Windows.exe</>.</li>
<li>Click the <>Start Repairs</> tab on the far right.</li>
<li>Click the <>Start</> button (bottom right)
Note: When asked if you would like to create a restore point. It is recommended just in-case something does not go as planned.</li>
<li>Click <>Unselect All</></li>
<li>Put a checkmark in the following items:

HitmanPro runs without any threats being detected, and so no log.
Roguekiller ran ok, logs attached.
ESET Scanner ran without finding any threats and produced no log
Windows Repair All in One ran ok
OTL ran ok, log attached

Windows Defender now running again.

When running Windows Update (to update the Windows Defender update from 27/7/12) get error code 80246008, which I think is where we started.

Ok,lets try this steps:

Ok lets try to re-register the BITS Service:

1. Click START
2. Type “cmd” in the Search Box and then press Enter
3. Right-click “cmd.exe" and select “Run as administrator”
4. Click “Continue” on the “User Account Control” Window
5. In the command prompt type the following command
<code>sc create BITS binpath= “c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs” start= delayed-auto</code>
6.Restart your computer and check if the problem is solved.

After a couple of failed attempts this has now worked, BITS is running and have been able to update the Windows Defender Update.

My first mistake was to copy and paste the command instead of actually typing it, and then I typed it incorrectly. Third try worked ok.

I did find this on the microsoft forums before I contacted you, but had failed to understand that CMD.exe had to be run in Administrator mode.

Thanks. Is there anything else I should do and what ongoing scans etc should I run to keep on top of this.

Ok,glad to see that now everything is working.
I recommend that you scan your computer once a week with Malwarebytes and HitmanPro to make sure everything is ok. Also you'll need to build a layered security configuration, so I do advise you to start a thread in our Security Configuration Wizard forum.

Unless you are having other problems, it is time to do the final steps.

<>Remove ComboFix</>
<ol>
<li>Hold down the <>Windows key</> + <>R</> on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box</li>

Hi, have completed the cleanup steps above. All appears to be ok for now.

Can I also remove the Tweaking Computer application and the ESETs installer.

Yes,of course....You can uninstall/delete any utility that we've used.
ESET Online Scanner can be remove from the Uninstall Programs component ,while Windows All in One just needs to be deleted. :)
