I used to use Mx Player back in the day. Never touched it again after an Indian company purchased and destroyed it.
Like you, I'm also using VLC since then. I rarely watch any videos on the phone though. Currently, only have two seasons of the show Family Guy in it.

VLC Player, all the way from my now-defunct Android 4.4 tablet up to my latest Android P phone. (I also use New Pipe as a super lightweight front end for watching YouTube videos.) Nothing else I've tried even comes close to VLC.
Also used MX player back in the day when it was good. It had a problem playing AC3 Audio format
files so I then switched to Archos Video Player which had an Audio codec extension that allowed AC3 Audio to work on Android.
Don't watch movies/series on my phone anymore. Just the odd YouTube video.
