Serious Discussion What are your thoughts on uBlockDNS?

I know about it, haven't used it though. There was a controversy about the service name and the fact that the owner of this project also created unofficial website for uBlock Origin.

Gorhill and some others said they do not condone this and that the owner should change the name of the service to avoid confusion. Owner said the name change is in the process.

I would strongly advise everyone to steer clear of uBlockDNS. There are several major red flags that make using this service a serious security and privacy liability:

  • Deceptive branding: It piggybacks on the uBlock Origin name and branding despite having zero affiliation with Raymond Hill or the official uBO team.
  • DNS privacy risk: Handing your DNS resolution to an anonymous, unvetted entity gives them full visibility to log, monetize, or hijack all your network traffic.
  • Dangerous setup scripts: Running the site's suggested PowerShell or curl | sh scripts with elevated privileges exposes your system to severe compromise.
  • Trusted alternatives exist: Vetted options like NextDNS, AdGuard DNS, Mullvad, or a self-hosted Pi-hole already do this safely and transparently.
When a service starts by piggybacking on another project's reputation under false pretenses, you should never trust it with your DNS queries or run its software. Hard pass!

It clearly states so, it is a fan project using the free licence, anyone can do it, just like NextDNS did and look how popular they turned out to be. Private entity, yet trusted.
