Absolutely nothing comes up on the screen. You don't see the Windows logo. You don't see the manufacturer's logo. You don't see a blinking cursor.

Whatever it is, it's a hardware problem. Windows is not to blame. Nor is your hard drive.

Not always true, I've seen/experienced 3rd party security software cause black screen, also bad windows updates.

I've experienced it with Avast, and once with Qihoo 360 TS when I trialed it.

The only two that did it for me were BD and KIS,but I wouldn't doubt Avast causing this with it's NG and all the other fluff they added to a once very good AV!!

PS:The new KIS beta which I trialed on my spare pc was an absolute disaster and made my PC unbootable

I still use avast, despite a love/hate relationship. For a free AV it offers many features often seen only in paid AVs. And although Avast detection has fallen off a bit in recent times, what still makes it compelling is the support it provides to its users. There maybe other free AVs out there that performs better, but have little to no customer support. And last but not least, Avast is modular allowing the user to configure it to suit their needs/taste.

Software or Hardware may both contribute for a culprit why pc turns to remain black.

Since the thing you will diagnose is the last time you do before sudden happens therefore if you have bootable disc of Windows then you may attempt to repair/ you should attempt to launch safe mode easily from XP/Vista and 7 (except win 8/8.1)

Buggy Graphic card driver, incompatible/defective graphics card also cause problem.
