I second this notion. You can also block some app permissions (and the app will still work flawlessly) using App ops (Android 4.3-4.4): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ovmobile.appopslauncher&hl=en and if you're rooted theres an Xposed module for that (If your handset android version isnt 4.3/4.4)

download only from trusted source & specially choose that AV which is strong against PUP/adware coz sometimes even u download trusted application from trusted source like google play store, they r bundled with PUP & u can't even manually untick/find anything during installation.
