A massive trove in 32 terabytes of internal Microsoft source code, builds and tools have leaked onto the internet, downloadable by all and sundry,

The Register reports the files, Microsoft’s Shared Source Kit, appears to have leaked from internal Microsoft servers in March this year and includes the source to the base Windows 10 hardware drivers plus Redmond’s PnP code, its USB and Wi-Fi stacks, its storage drivers, and ARM-specific OneCore kernel code.

It also includes new builds for Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016, unreleased 64-bit ARM versions of Windows and multiple versions of Microsoft’s Windows 10 Mobile Adaptation Kit.

The source kit, found, but since removed on Beta Archive, is meant to be available to only “qualified customers, enterprises, governments, and partners for debugging and reference purposes,” and access to the source code may make it easier for motivated hackers to find exploits in Windows.

On the other hand, given that the code was already meant to be available to “qualified customers, enterprises, governments, and partners” its release may not be such a big deal after all, as Microsoft may already have an expectation that this data could one day leak.

We should see the impact if any of this leak with increased malware targeting Windows in the coming months. Hopefully, this won’t rise above the noise level normal for the biggest desktop operating system in the world.

This is like Coca Cola or Pepsi having their formula stolen and publically disclosed.

Legally, is MS now forced to tear apart the OS for portions/sockets/innovations to patent in order to protect the code from being duplicated for profit? I don't think they would have ever had to do this before, since noone knew before what is in the program.

While a Windows 10 source code leak sounds catastrophic, this is not as bad as it sounds. According to experts, the leaked source code is part of the Microsoft's Shared Source Kit program, and most of it was already available online
I read it here.
The bad part is, the future win10 version has been leaked so it provides more time to hackers in finding vulnerabilities in it.

What next? Hackers building versions of Windows 10 without the extra junk and such?

microsoft is now open source or should i say out in the open source ;)

2016 anniversary update 2017 creator's update 2018 hacker's update, as simple as that.

On the plus side, it also gives researchers and white hat hackers time to find and report vulnerabilities to Microsoft so they can patch the Windows version before release.

wishful thinking :) @bliu, this is a massive leak of future isos & not a beta release for feedback.

They say it was not as serious as previously thought though. Anyone read this?

so they say. so they always say

there already is a plethora of hacked windows 10 isos out there @Danielx64 pre-activated, minus the bloatware & with updates.

But I don't consider proper unless you get source code and compile it.

true. with the source code available the altered iso could be made almost as good as the original, may be even better.
