How to remove Delta Search homepage (Virus Removal Guide)

Delta Search (www.delta-search.com) is a browser hijacker that is bundled with other free software that you download off of the Internet. Once installed it will set the homepage and search engine for any installed browsers to http://www.delta-search.com/… without your permission.

Delta Search virus

Delta Search is bundled with other free software that you download off of the Internet. Unfortunately, some free downloads do not adequately disclose that other software will also be installed and you may find that you have installed adware without your knowledge.

For example, when you install NowUSeeIt Player, you will also agree to change your browser homepage to www.delta-search.com.
Delta Search also modify the default search provider of your browser so that it first connects to http://search.delta-search.com or http://www.delta-search.com/, which then redirects you to Yahoo where it will display its ads. Last, but not least, this hijacker will install a desktop search button that when clicked on allows you to search directly from your desktop. Just like the browser search, this too will redirect you through sites under their control until eventually showing you the search results in Yahoo.

You should always pay attention when installing software because often, a software installer includes optional installs, such as this Delta Search browser hijacker. Be very careful what you agree to install.
Always opt for the custom installation and deselect anything that is not familiar, especially optional software that you never wanted to download and install in the first place. It goes without saying that you should not install software that you don’t trust.

Note: Your old Firefox profile will be placed on your desktop in a folder named “Old Firefox Data“. If the reset didn’t fix your problem you can restore some of the information not saved by copying files to the new profile that was created. If you don’t need this folder any longer, you should delete it as it contains sensitive information.

Google Chrome

Google Chrome has an option that will reset itself to its default settings. Resetting your browser settings will reset the unwanted changes caused by installing other programmes. However, your saved bookmarks and passwords will not be cleared or changed.

  1. Click on Chrome’s main menu button, represented by three horizontal lines ([Image: Chrome's main menu button]). When the drop-down menu appears, select the option labeled Settings.
    Click on Settings

  4. A confirmation dialog should now be displayed, detailing the components that will be restored to their default state should you continue on with the reset process. To complete the restoration process, click on the Reset button.
Restore Google Chrome to default settings

Your computer should now be free of the Delta Search browser hijacker. You can now remove AdwCleaner from your machine, however we recommend that you keep HitmanPro and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware installed and perform regular computer scans.

How to Stay Safe Online

Here are 10 basic security tips to help you avoid malware and protect your device:

  1. Use a good antivirus and keep it up-to-date.

    Shield Guide

It's essential to use a good quality antivirus and keep it up-to-date to stay ahead of the latest cyber threats. We are huge fans of Malwarebytes Premium and use it on all of our devices, including Windows and Mac computers as well as our mobile devices. Malwarebytes sits beside your traditional antivirus, filling in any gaps in its defenses, and providing extra protection against sneakier security threats.

  2. Keep software and operating systems up-to-date.

    updates-guide

Keep your operating system and apps up to date. Whenever an update is released for your device, download and install it right away. These updates often include security fixes, vulnerability patches, and other necessary maintenance.

  3. Be careful when installing programs and apps.

    install guide

Pay close attention to installation screens and license agreements when installing software. Custom or advanced installation options will often disclose any third-party software that is also being installed. Take great care in every stage of the process and make sure you know what it is you're agreeing to before you click "Next."

  4. Install an ad blocker.

    Ad Blocker

Use a browser-based content blocker, like AdGuard. Content blockers help stop malicious ads, Trojans, phishing, and other undesirable content that an antivirus product alone may not stop.

  5. Be careful what you download.

    Trojan Horse

A top goal of cybercriminals is to trick you into downloading malware—programs or apps that carry malware or try to steal information. This malware can be disguised as an app: anything from a popular game to something that checks traffic or the weather.

  6. Be alert for people trying to trick you.

    warning sign

Whether it's your email, phone, messenger, or other applications, always be alert and on guard for someone trying to trick you into clicking on links or replying to messages. Remember that it's easy to spoof phone numbers, so a familiar name or number doesn't make messages more trustworthy.

  7. Back up your data.

    backup sign

Back up your data frequently and check that your backup data can be restored. You can do this manually on an external HDD/USB stick, or automatically using backup software. This is also the best way to counter ransomware. Never connect the backup drive to a computer if you suspect that the computer is infected with malware.

  8. Choose strong passwords.

    lock sign

Use strong and unique passwords for each of your accounts. Avoid using personal information or easily guessable words in your passwords. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your accounts whenever possible.

  9. Be careful where you click.

    cursor sign

Be cautious when clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown sources. These could potentially contain malware or phishing scams.

  10. Don't use pirated software.

    Shady Guide

Avoid using Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file-sharing programs, keygens, cracks, and other pirated software that can often compromise your data, privacy, or both.

To avoid potential dangers on the internet, it's important to follow these 10 basic safety rules. By doing so, you can protect yourself from many of the unpleasant surprises that can arise when using the web.

  1. Delta-home-search virus or whatever established itself as my home page in google chrome yesterday. WINZIPPER by Taiwan Shui Mu Chih Ching Technology Limited downloaded into my download folder at about the same time. I was puzzled why MSE with current updates permitted it to occur. 11. Hi,
Thanks for this post and the recommended software. The points you mentioned removed Deltasearch, but only partially. I continued to recieve (every minute or two) a popup that said: “An attempt has been made to change your browser homepage”, which I would have to close every few minutes.
I then continued with this tutorial and used the ADwCleaner, and must admit, it appears to have worked like a charm. No more popus, and no more opening my browser and finding deltasearch as an open tab.
    Thanks again for this!

  31. Hello Anne,
The Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and HitmanPro scans will not take more than 30 minutes to complete, and they may detect additional malware.
I highly recommend that you perform these two scan, just to be on the safe side!
However, if you do not have the time or do not wish to do them, you can skip them, as they are meant as a “double-check” steps.

    Stay safe!

  34. Hello Dave,
AdwCleaner uses advanced detection techniques and some antivirus products may detect it as malware. Nevertheless, this product is clean and safe. You can search online, and I’m sure you’ll see that it got a great reputation.

Anyway, the Delta Search should be removed after the second step… so if you really do not wish to run this program, you can just skip it.

    Stay safe! :)

  42. I completed all the instructions shown above for chrome, yet delta search took over every new tab . I saw that someone else in the comments below had the same issue , but it still won’t go away even after those instructions….

  43. Hello James,
No, you can use “Open a specific page or set of pages”, I have recommended “Open New Tab” because is the default option in Chrome.

To use Open a specific page or set of pages: Click Set pages and enter the web addresses of the pages you want to see, also if there is delta-search.com or any other unwanted page, make sure to remove it from the list.

  44. Hello Angelica,

Click on Chrome menu button, then select Settings, and in the On Startup section, put the check mark on One the New Tab page.

Let me know everything is working….

  45. Hello,
Yes of course! I recommended the Quick scan so that you’ll save time. however the full scan is more comprehensive, so if you have the time, go ahead!

  46. Thank you – your directions are excellent! I had most of it removed and with your help I removed the search engine and a few malware files. My browser is working great again! Thanks so much!!!

  53. Got that stupid malware this morning. It hacked my browsers, change the home and default search engines and blocked my Chrome from searching eventually.

After carefully following the instructions in this page, I successfully removed everything that “virus” put and left in my system. Thanks!!

  54. As the other comments, this is another thanks! ^_^
Delta infected all my browsers and their search engines.
So glad that there’s more than one program willing to help!
Even though this page was written just 5 months ago, it might need a bit of updating with the screenshots, because those scan programs seem to already offer new versions.

One last thing, for some reason, Hitmanpro said “0 threats detected” but said “threats detected 664” right below that. This was right after I fully scanned with AdwCleaner and Malwarebytes Anti-malware. There seems to be no trace of Delta left in any of my browsers or engines. Is there something else I still need to do to be exactly 100% rid of Delta?

Other than that, seems this article has helped solve everything.
    Thanks again so much!

  56. Thanks so much!!! Delta Search is finally gone. What would you use as the best computer protection, so this doesn’t happen again?

  57. Thank you so much. I’m normally good about not downloading crap, but I wasn’t paying much attention when I ended up with Delta search. A check on google lead me here, and the problem was quickly solved. I’ve also used the ADWCleaner on my parent’s computer in order to clear them up. Apparently they were chalk full of crap slowing them down. This really helped, thank you!

  58. THANK YOU!!!!!! Saved me from endless hours of cursing and looking at crappy blinking ads!

I use Moz FFox and it’s there but I can switch to google no problems. IE defaults to delta I ran a MSE scan but MBAM picked up the viruses, quarantined and I removed them, rebooted twice and yet Delta won’t be removed. Any tips? Do not ask me to download anything more, my machine is way too slow/old and can’t handle it. I have CCleaner, would that help? I deleted LSOs and still there. HELP!

  73. Hello Bonviveur,

Tracking cookies are harmless, however if you want to remove them, you can run Temp File Cleaner to remove those cookies.

1.You can download the TFC utility from the below link

    TFC DOWNLOAD LINK : http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe

2.Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista or 7, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).

    3. This utility will close all programs when it will be started, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.

4.Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.

5.Once it’s finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

  74. it works! make sure to do the malware scan, i ended up finding other problems too!

  75. Thank you! Im not very skilled with software issues, removing of malwares, viruses etc., but this guide is written in very plain and simple way and i did remove Delta (Delta-Search) by my own.

I didn’t even knew i was infected because Delta has never “shown”, i mean my browsers start pages were fine. I just decided to check in “Search” of my computer for keyword “Delta” and i found it. Also my Internet Explorer star page was changed (i didn’t know because i don’t use it).

  76. Thank you I manged to remove it myself last time but this time it really had it’s claws in. Gone now.
