The latest Nvidia drivers auto update which is great, but yes all other things being equal ,it is best to download directly from nvidia/amd etc!!

They gives you the basics , what is needed for your computer to run properly, after it is you that might updates those drivers manually to the most recent ones.

Microsoft update won't install PhysX, 3D drivers, GeForce Experience and I'm not sure about the HD audio drivers. It will install nVidia updater utility. Personally, I just need the driver, PhysX, and HD audio and none of the other stuff.

At least with the Microsoft driver, you're not stuck with an 800x600 screen!

If it has a dedicated nvidia gpu you need to install the driver for it!
Does this model have a dedicated GPU?
 
@yesnoo : Yes Windows Update provides hardware patches which sometimes rated as 'Optional', but that's not sufficient which still a manual check is needed if there's an available version.

However better use GWX monitor for reservation upgrade and check for problems in hardware that might be incompatible.

Currently GWX shows my laptop good for Win 10.

By the way, upgrade through windows updates is necessary or one can directly upgrade with iso?

The last Microsoft explanation I read is a bit of a pain: you have to upgrade with your Win7/8 and then you can create your own ISO from which you can do a clean install.

Therefore, since I'm running Win10 now, my plan is to make a backup, configure my hardware the way I want (I have some changes I want to make and I don't want to deal with re-activation), install/activate Win7, upgrade to 10, burn the ISO, then perform a clean installation. Definitely an all-nighter there. I'll have to do the same with the laptop but I have MSI Win8 recovery disks.

Go into device manager and check for it under display adapters!
Although I believe it does have an Nvidia gpu:Nvidia GeForce 9200M
You can go here and download the relevant driver,if applicable!!:)

Under Display Adapters I have -
Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family

@yesnoo : As for safety then clean install is way to go, but upgrading on WIndows Updates isn't bad at all; if its an OEM laptop then expect to remove on those upgrade conditions.
