Tax Invoice Email Scam Uses a Fake Document to Steal Your Webmail Login

By Lapain Epuran10 min read

An invoice can be ordinary paperwork, an expensive mistake, or a sign that someone used your identity. The Tax Invoice Email Scam exploits all three possibilities with one short message and a document button that leads to a stolen-password form.

Advertisements
Reconstruction of the tax invoice phishing email for invoice INV0008128

The message uses the subject β€œInvoice INV0008128” and says the recipient has received a tax invoice. A β€œView Document” button appears above a signature for Antoinette Maree in Accounts and a footer reading β€œGenerated by Accounting.”

Those details imitate an automated bookkeeping notification, but the email does not establish which business issued the invoice, what was supplied, when it was ordered, or why the recipient owes anything. Curiosity is expected to fill those gaps.

The button opens a fake β€œWelcome to Webmail” page hosted through abused cloud infrastructure. The address may already be filled in, leaving only the password field and making the fraudulent page look connected to the invoice delivery system.

Overview

A Tiny Message Built Around Curiosity

This lure is unusually brief. It offers invoice INV0008128, a named Accounts contact, and a Generated by Accounting footer, then lets the recipient’s curiosity supply the missing business story.

No seller, amount, purchase order, tax breakdown, or due date appears before the View Document button. Someone who fears an unpaid bill or unauthorized purchase may click simply to discover what the invoice concerns.

That restraint is deliberate. A detailed fake invoice creates facts that can be disproved, while a vague reference number can fit almost any household or workplace inbox.

The Invoice Button Opens a Mail Login

View Document does not open a supplier’s invoice portal or a PDF. The observed route lands on a counterfeit Welcome to Webmail page placed on abused Firebase Storage infrastructure.

A prefilled email address makes the page feel connected to the recipient, but the attacker already possessed that address to send the lure. The only new information the form needs is the password.

The Mailbox Is More Valuable Than the Invoice

The invoice is bait for a mailbox, not a direct request for payment. Work email can reveal purchase history, tax documents, customer names, and the precise language used in legitimate finance conversations.

With that context, criminals can wait for a real invoice thread, substitute payment details, or send fresh document lures from the compromised account. The damage can continue long after INV0008128 is forgotten.

Even when no payment is requested in the first message, the stolen correspondence can tell an attacker which invoices, suppliers, and approval habits will make a later demand believable.

  • Subject used: Invoice INV0008128.
  • Claim: the recipient has received a tax invoice.
  • Button: View Document.
  • Signature: Antoinette Maree, Accounts.
  • Footer: Generated by Accounting.
  • Destination: a fake Welcome to Webmail form on abused cloud hosting.

What the Tax Invoice Email Leaves Unanswered

There Is No Verifiable Supplier

A legitimate tax invoice identifies the legal supplier, customer, invoice date, taxable items, totals, and payment terms. The lure depends on a reference number and generic Accounts signature instead.

The recipient cannot match INV0008128 to a purchase order, contract, delivery, or known contact. That missing commercial context is more important than the professional appearance of the button.

Opening a Document Should Not Require a Mail Password

A supplier may protect a document with a portal login, but it should be a portal the customer already knows. An invoice does not need the recipient’s webmail password to display a PDF or accounting record.

When a document link unexpectedly becomes a generic Welcome to Webmail form, the promised invoice has disappeared. The new task is credential collection, regardless of how accurate the logo or email field looks.

Cloud Hosting Does Not Endorse the Page

Firebase Storage is a legitimate Google service that can host files and web content. Attackers may abuse such platforms because their infrastructure is reliable and familiar to filters and users.

Google is not involved in the Tax Invoice Email Scam merely because its service was misused. The relevant question is whether the page belongs to the stated supplier or mail provider, and it does not.

How the Tax Invoice Email Scam Works

Step 1: A Short Invoice Notice Reaches the Recipient

The campaign begins with a compact message rather than a long payment demand. The subject Invoice INV0008128 supplies a reference that looks searchable in an accounting system.

The sender may target businesses broadly because employees often receive invoices from vendors they do not personally recognize. A household recipient may open it to check for an unauthorized purchase.

Step 2: A Named Accounts Contact Adds Social Proof

The body is signed by Antoinette Maree in Accounts and ends with Generated by Accounting. These elements suggest the message came from an automated finance workflow.

Advertisements

A name in an email is not identity verification. It may be invented, copied from public information, or unrelated to the company the recipient assumes is involved.

Advertisements

Step 3: The Missing Details Create an Information Gap

The Tax Invoice Email Scam does not need to describe a product or amount. The absence itself can drive the click because the reader wants to learn what the invoice covers.

This is a curiosity lure with a financial edge. The recipient believes the safest action is to inspect the document, even though the button is the least trustworthy way to do that.

Step 4: View Document Redirects to Cloud Infrastructure

The button sends the browser away from the visible sender. In the observed version, the landing page was hosted on Google Firebase Storage rather than a known supplier or mail-provider domain.

Advertisements

Redirect chains can hide the final host from basic email scanning. Hovering over the button helps, but users should still verify unexpected invoices through a known vendor contact.

Step 5: The Webmail Page Displays a Familiar Account

The counterfeit page says Welcome to Webmail and may prefill the recipient’s email address. Attackers already know that address because it was required to deliver the original message.

Prefilling creates false personalization. It does not prove the page queried the real mailbox, and it should not persuade the user to complete the remaining password field.

Step 6: The Password Is Captured and Tested

After the recipient selects Continue, the page records the credential. It may show an error and request another entry so the operator receives both the intended password and any corrected version.

Automated tools can test the credential against common mail services quickly. Successful access may be followed by session theft, forwarding rules, or deletion of security alerts.

Step 7: The Compromised Inbox Creates New Invoice Victims

An intruder can search genuine supplier threads and wait for a payment conversation. A message sent from the real mailbox can replace bank details or request an urgent transfer with far greater credibility.

The same account can also send Tax Invoice Email Scam messages to contacts. Recipients who recognize the sender are more likely to trust the next malicious document button.

Company, Address, and Fulfillment Checks

Company: Identify the Legal Supplier

Look for a complete company name, registration or tax details, physical address, and known relationship. A first name and Accounts label do not identify who supposedly issued the invoice.

Search internal purchase records or ask accounts payable whether INV0008128 exists. Do not use a telephone number or email address supplied only by the suspicious notice.

Address: Inspect the Document Destination

Hover over View Document on a computer or copy the link without opening it if your security process permits. The registered domain should belong to the supplier or an expected document platform.

Advertisements

A Firebase address can host legitimate material, but it does not become the supplier’s portal by default. Unexpected webmail prompts on storage domains should be reported as phishing.

Support: Contact the Vendor Through Known Records

Use the contact in an existing contract, previous paid invoice, official website, or procurement system. Ask whether the vendor issued the reference and which secure method it normally uses.

If the sender cannot be identified independently, there is no business reason to authenticate to anything. Delete or quarantine the message after the security team preserves it.

Fulfillment: Match Goods, Services, and Tax

A real invoice follows a purchase, delivery, subscription, or agreed milestone. Compare line items, dates, tax treatment, purchase order, and receiving records before treating any payment document as valid.

The Tax Invoice Email Scam supplies none of that evidence before requesting a mailbox password. Its only fulfilled transaction is the transfer of credentials to the attacker.

Warning Signs in the Tax Invoice Email Scam

Invoice phishing can be polished, but its accounting trail is usually much weaker than its visual design. Check the commercial facts before interacting with the document.

  • The subject contains INV0008128, but no known purchase record matches it.
  • The email names an Accounts contact without clearly identifying the issuing company.
  • No amount, tax breakdown, goods, services, due date, or purchase order appears.
  • View Document leads to a cloud-storage address rather than a known supplier portal.
  • The promised invoice is replaced by a generic Welcome to Webmail password form.
  • The recipient’s address is prefilled to make the page look account-aware.
  • A password error appears even when no real mail authentication occurred.

An unfamiliar invoice deserves verification, not automatic deletion, but verification must happen through purchase records and known contacts. The email’s own button cannot verify the email that supplied it.

What to Do if You Have Fallen Victim to This Scam

If you entered a password after selecting View Document, respond as if the mailbox is already exposed. The fake page can deliver captured information instantly.

  1. Replace the webmail password through the official service. Use a clean device and a bookmarked or manually typed address. Tell the provider that the Tax Invoice Email Scam captured the previous credential.
  2. Revoke sessions and application passwords. Sign out other browsers and mail clients, remove unknown app passwords, and disconnect unfamiliar OAuth applications. This closes access that may survive a password change.
  3. Enable a passkey or strong multifactor authentication. Remove telephone numbers and authenticators you do not recognize. Never approve a prompt that appeared after the invoice incident unless you initiated the sign-in.
  4. Inspect forwarding rules and delegates. Attackers use hidden rules to copy financial mail or move warnings out of sight. Review inbox filters, forwarding addresses, shared mailbox permissions, and recovery settings.
  5. Alert accounts payable and known vendors. Explain that invoice conversations may be exposed. Require independent confirmation for bank-detail changes, urgent transfers, and replacement invoices until the mailbox investigation is complete.
  6. Change reused passwords on connected accounts. Prioritize payroll, banking, cloud storage, document signing, shopping, and tax services. Use a password manager to create a different password for each account.
  7. Run Malwarebytes if a file or program opened. The observed lure focused on credentials, but variants can add downloads. Update Malwarebytes, perform a full scan, quarantine detections, and keep the scan report.
  8. Use AdGuard to reduce exposure to known phishing pages. AdGuard can block some malicious hosts and redirectors. It adds useful friction, but newly deployed sites may remain reachable and stolen passwords still need immediate revocation.
  9. Review the mailbox for invoice manipulation. Search Sent, Deleted, Archive, and rules for messages about payment instructions. Contact affected parties through known numbers, not by replying inside a possibly monitored thread.
  10. Preserve and report the campaign. Save the original email with headers, invoice reference, link, and screenshots. Report the hosted page to the platform provider and notify internal security or local authorities if funds or regulated data were affected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is invoice INV0008128 a real tax invoice?

The message described in this report is phishing and does not establish a valid debt. Check procurement and vendor records independently before deciding whether any similarly numbered invoice exists.

Why is the recipient’s email already on the login page?

The attacker already had the address used to send the lure and can place it in the link. Prefilling is a presentation trick, not evidence that the page is connected to the mailbox.

Is Google responsible because Firebase Storage hosted the page?

No. Legitimate cloud services can be abused by third parties. The host should receive an abuse report, but its infrastructure does not endorse or authenticate the fraudulent invoice page.

Advertisements

Can a genuine invoice require a portal login?

Yes, but the portal should be expected, vendor-specific, and reached through a known route. It should not unexpectedly demand the password for an unrelated webmail account.

What if I entered only my email address?

The attacker already likely knew it, but the submission can confirm that the account is active. Expect follow-up phishing, report the page, and secure the mailbox if any password was also entered.

Should I reply to Antoinette Maree for clarification?

No. The signature is part of the unverified message. Contact the supposed supplier through existing records or ask accounts payable to investigate without replying to the suspicious address.

The Bottom Line

The Tax Invoice Email Scam uses a believable reference, a named Accounts contact, and an automated footer to make one button feel safe. The missing supplier and transaction details reveal that the document story has no reliable foundation.

Match unexpected invoices to real purchase records before opening them. If View Document led to a webmail form and you entered a password, revoke access immediately and warn anyone whose payment conversations may be exposed.
