The “Microsoft Lottery” email scam is a phishing attempt designed to deceive recipients into providing personal information, paying a fee to claim the prize, or both. By gaining access to sensitive information, scammers can potentially commit identity theft or other fraudulent activities. Alternatively, they may require the victim to pay an upfront fee, ostensibly for tax or processing purposes, only to vanish once the payment is made.

The “Microsoft Lottery” Scam Email: What You Need to Know
The scam email usually has a subject line like “Congratulations” and appears to be sent from the New Jersey Lottery District Office and the Apex Microsoft Lottery. It claims that the recipient has won a staggering US$2,000,000 and provides a reference number and batch number, making it seem more legitimate.
The email then instructs the recipient to contact an “International Coordinator,” usually a person with a name like Mr. James Bernado, to claim the prize. Contact information, such as an email address, phone number, and WhatsApp number, is provided.
However, this email is not what it seems. It is, in fact, a scam designed to trick the recipient into either providing personal information or paying a fee to claim the prize—or both.
What Happens If You Respond?
If a recipient responds to the email, they may be asked to provide sensitive personal information, such as their full name, date of birth, address, and bank account details. This information can then be used for identity theft or to empty the victim’s bank account.
Alternatively, the scammer may ask the recipient to pay a fee, claiming that this payment is necessary to release the prize. This fee could be presented as a tax, clearance, or processing fee. Once the fee is paid, the scammer may disappear or continue to request additional payments for other alleged expenses.
How to Avoid Falling Victim to the “Microsoft Lottery” Email Scam
To protect yourself from the “Microsoft Lottery” scam and other similar phishing emails, follow these guidelines:
- Be skeptical: If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Genuine lotteries do not notify winners via email, and you cannot win a lottery you did not enter.
- Check the sender’s email address: Scammers often use email addresses that resemble legitimate organizations but are slightly altered. Compare the email address with the organization’s official website to spot discrepancies.
- Look for signs of fraud: Poor grammar, spelling mistakes, and unprofessional formatting are red flags that indicate a scam email.
- Do not provide personal information: Never share your personal information, such as your Social Security number, bank account details, or passwords, with anyone via email.
- Do not pay any fees: Legitimate lotteries do not require winners to pay fees to claim their prize. If you are asked to pay a fee, it is most likely a scam.
- Report the email: If you receive a suspicious email, report it to your email provider and delete the email immediately. You can also report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or your country’s relevant authorities.
