A missing Drive file may be in another account, moved to a different folder, removed by a collaborator or placed in Trash. Restoring the wrong item or asking a stranger to recover it can waste the time during which recovery remains possible. Start by identifying what happened.
Find the file methodically
- Open Drive directly and verify the Google Account avatar. Search part of the filename, file type or owner. If you use work and personal accounts, check both separately.
- Open the Drive Trash and sort by trashed date. If the file is there, right-click and Restore, then verify the content. Google says ordinary items remain in Trash for 30 days.
- If it is not in Trash, inspect My Drive → Info → Activity to see whether it moved or was deleted. For a shared file, ask the owner whether access changed; a file someone else owns may disappear from your view without being deleted.
- If it was permanently deleted, read Google's official recovery eligibility promptly. Some files may be recoverable under conditions, but do not promise success or pay a third party claiming special access.
