A Google Drive file vanished: search before assuming deletion

A missing Drive file may be in another account, moved to a different folder, removed by a collaborator or placed in Trash. Restoring the wrong item or asking a stranger to recover it can waste the time during which recovery remains possible. Start by identifying what happened.

Find the file methodically

  1. Open Drive directly and verify the Google Account avatar. Search part of the filename, file type or owner. If you use work and personal accounts, check both separately.
  2. Open the Drive Trash and sort by trashed date. If the file is there, right-click and Restore, then verify the content. Google says ordinary items remain in Trash for 30 days.
  3. If it is not in Trash, inspect My Drive → Info → Activity to see whether it moved or was deleted. For a shared file, ask the owner whether access changed; a file someone else owns may disappear from your view without being deleted.
  4. If it was permanently deleted, read Google's official recovery eligibility promptly. Some files may be recoverable under conditions, but do not promise success or pay a third party claiming special access.

After recovery

Open the restored file and verify the version you needed. Review sharing permissions if the file was sensitive and moved unexpectedly. Save an independent copy if the document is irreplaceable. Google's lost-file guide lists search, activity, Trash and shared-file checks; its recovery guidance covers deletion. If the account itself shows unfamiliar activity, secure it before continuing edits. Our Google device checklist helps distinguish a known device from unauthorized access.
