Closing an app window does not necessarily stop its updater, synchronization helper or other background task. Many such tasks are legitimate, but an unfamiliar entry deserves investigation, especially after installing software from a questionable source. Turning everything off at once can break password managers, backup tools or security updates. Keep a short record of each change so you can reverse it.
Make a controlled review
- Open System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions. Review items that open at login and the app background-activity list. Write down unfamiliar names and when the behavior started.
- For each item, identify the associated app and publisher using the Applications folder, the app's own About screen or official documentation. A name alone can be misleading, so do not delete system files based on an internet list.
- Turn off one unneeded third-party background item, then restart or wait through the task it normally performs. Check whether sync, backup or updates still work. Restore the setting if a needed function breaks.
- If you want the app gone, use its legitimate uninstaller when provided. Review login items again afterward; uninstalling an app is different from merely stopping a background toggle.
