A buyer may send a screenshot or convincing email saying payment is pending, then urge you to ship the item. The FTC warns that fake payment notifications are common on online marketplaces. The email may claim you need to upgrade a seller account, pay a fee or refund an accidental overpayment. None of those messages proves money has reached an account you control. Verify inside the real marketplace or payment provider before handing over goods.
Before you start
Keep conversation on the platform where possible, preserve the listing and buyer messages, and learn the platform's seller protection and shipping rules. Be cautious of a buyer who immediately moves you to text or email or claims a courier will collect the item before payment clears.Do it step by step
- Open the selling platform and payment provider through your own app or bookmarked website, not a link from the buyer's message. Confirm the account name and transaction ID.
- Check the transaction state in the provider's actual activity ledger. A screenshot, email, or 'funds release after tracking' story is not enough. Distinguish a pending authorization from available funds under the provider's rules.
- Do not pay to 'upgrade' a personal account to receive the buyer's money. Ask the provider directly through its official support if a notice claims that such a fee is required.
- If the buyer says they overpaid and wants a partial refund to another account, stop. Do not send money back from your own balance before the original transaction is verified and final under the provider's process.
- Only after confirmed payment and compliance with seller protection rules should you ship to the verified address in the transaction. Keep tracking and proof of delivery. Do not change address based solely on a separate chat message.
- If you shipped prematurely, contact the carrier immediately about an intercept and report the transaction to the marketplace and payment provider. Preserve evidence and watch for account compromise if you entered credentials on a linked page.
